When her 14-year-old daughter said she wanted a baby, Mum tried to buy her one according to Georgia authorities.

47-year-old Elaine Williams placed an advertisement on Craigslist advertising a ‘Baby Box’ in which Mums could place their newborns and Elaine and her daughter would look after the baby.  There was one stipulation however on the advertisement, that no disabled children could be placed into the box.

In a recent interview with NBC News, Sheriff Dwayne Piper said that a member of the public alerted authorities to the advertisement, after the advertisement had been live for 12 days.

Throughout their investigation, he said it became increasingly “sad” as they realised that Elaine had truly placed the advertisement to get the baby for her daughter.

It had gotten sad actually throughout the investigation, as it was simply a fourteen year old girl who wanted a baby.  Her mother rather than guiding and helping raise her 14 year old daughter, decided to help her find a baby instead,” explained Sheriff Piper, “they were prepared for a baby.  The fourteen year old had a crib, formula, diapers and baby gifts that were ready for the baby.”

Elaine has been charged with Domestic-Unlawful Advertisement/Inducement for Adoption of Children.  Her fourteen-year-old daughter is also facing charges.

  • I heard a 13 year old say she wanted a baby one day. What she meant was she wanted a baby sister or brother. The girl was an only child and was missing not having any siblings like her friends at her new school did. Some of her new friends also had baby or toddler aged siblings. Prior to that they lived on an outback property so it was all a new experience to her.
But this case is wierd as there is no comment of logic printed in the article. I know a girl that attended a special needs class because she was basically just a slow learner. Apparently each girl at some point during the school year was given a doll, that cried, had to be fed with a bottle, nappy changed, burped etc. If it cried it had to be picked up or it just didn’t stop at all. Sometimes it would cry for about 5 minutes even after the girl had checked everything was Ok. They had it from Friday afternoon until they went back to school on the Monday. One Mum asked permission to give it to her older daughter for a weekend and she quickly changed her mind about having a baby. Although engaged at the time, then married she never had a baby. She doesn’t want the responsibility. She realised she couldn’t just up and go out just whenever the mood took her, that a baby is very time consuming, has to be fed, burped and nappies changed as needed, not when she decides she has time. Not to mention the washing that babies make that she realised when she visited a friend who had a young baby at the time. In actual fact the “baby minding weekend” made a few realise that they were not ready to care for a baby.
Maybe some teenage boys should be given a day with one too.

  • I find it such a weird story! Why did that girl want a baby? And the mother? There must be something wrong with her, to place such an ad and help her daughter trying to make it become reality. So strange!

  • I have heard of stories where newborns are actually kidnapped from hospitals due to desperation and it is a crime that needs authorities need to be aware of . She is mentally ill and needs treatment for herself and her daughter to help them with their lives .

  • Thank goodness there has been intervention by the law. Education is most certainly needed for both – mother and daughter.
