Health authorities are contacting at least 3,000 patients in Sydney who may have been administered vaccines that were either expired or incorrectly stored since 2010.

Patients who visited a Burwood GP centre on Lindsay Street run by Drs Darrel and Brinda Weinman since 2010 may need to be revaccinated, the Sydney Local Health District has warned.

“We are writing to patients of that practice to ask them to get advice from a new GP on the need for revaccination,” Clinical Director of Public Health, Dr Leena Gupta said.

“However, due to inconsistent record keeping at the practice, it has been difficult to identify which patients have been vaccinated and to obtain contact details for all patients.”

Dr Brinda Weinman who retired last month, has been cooperative in assisting with the investigation, the SLHD said.

A spokesperson for the Sydney Local Health District told 10 daily health authorities are urging anyone who was vaccinated at the practice since 2010 to seek advice from a GP.

The spokesperson said that while the flu vaccine is an annual jab, those who had received Measles-Mumps-Rubella vaccines should seek advice from another GP, adding that any of the vaccines on the immunisation register may also need to be retaken — including chicken pox.

The spokesperson said it was safe for people to have the vaccines again, even if they have already had the vaccine before.

  • Not good but good accountability for advising this error. Vaccines also need to be stored at a correct temperature and always hope everyone from reception, doctor and suppliers follow correct instructions.

  • Just not good enough. It’s not hard to check use by dates before they’re used. I hope no one got too sick from this

  • Hopefully they can notify everyone and there are no adverse effects.

  • Concerning and what a waste of money

  • This certainly doesn’t help the whole “vaccinating is best” idea. Scary, but I guess nothing in life is perfect.

  • When one of my Doctors retired they took all the patient records to the Medical Centre that their patients transferred to. There was a few different Medical Centres that patients changed to. Some small Medical Centres weren’t able to cope with more patients. Apparently one even had a waiting list.

  • Very worrying if they can’t even identify everyone affected.
