18-month old toddler shot in the head and died shortly after he was transported to a local hospital.

Henry County Police in Georgia, said they are investigating the ordeal as a “tragic accident,” and believe the boy was struck by a bullet somewhere on his head or face, FOX 5 reported.

Police were notified when the child died at Piedmont Henry Hospital two hours later.

“We are actively investigating if it was an accidental shooting by the three-year-old, or accidentally inflicted by the one-and-a-half-year-old,” Lieutenant Mike Ireland told FOX 5.

Lt. Ireland added that the gun involved in the shooting was a .45 calibre weapon, and belonged to a family member inside the home. The handgun was set down in a bedroom while two adults were present, and after a gunshot went off, the adults turned to see the 18-month-old wounded.

Police said they believe the three-year-old sibling, who is adopted, is the individual who fired the weapon, but are also investigating if the 18-month-old toddler shot himself. The gun will be sent for fingerprint testing to determine who ultimately was responsible.

The name of the toddler has not been released. Police said both parents and grandparents were present in the home at the time, but declined to say who owned the gun.

Police have secured a search warrant at the home to investigate the bedroom where the shooting happened.

  • Guns… Another terrible accident. Just because people keep guns in the house. Will they never learn? :-(

  • IDIOTS SHOULD NOT HAVE GUNS.
Number one rule. The gun must be locked away. That means locked in a cupboard and the key needs to be kept elsewhere and then gun should not be left loaded and the ammo should be in another part of the house.
There is no way a child should even be able to access a gun.
    STUPID ADULTS.

  • why the heck wasn’t the gun locked away while children were present. This is horrible to read.
I also don’t understand why it was pointed out that the 3yr old was adopted, how is this important information?

  • We have reasonable gun laws in Aust. although too many get into the wrong hands. Under the firearms act any firearm has to be locked in a secure place. The ammunition has to be locked up in a different secure spot. They must not be stored together in the same locked cupboard or whatever is being used.

  • These accidents occur way too frequently yet the US will not consider gun control.

  • When you hear stories like this, you feel so lucky to live in a country that have strong gun restrictions. With so many weapons in America, accidents are bound to happen!
