The type of removalist you choose for your move will depend on your personal circumstances.

The amount of furniture you have, the distance, the amount of people in your family, time constraints and budget are just a few factors.

And when moving interstate across Australia with young children, there will be other priorities and considerations to take into account.

Details of the different options available are below:

Self-Pack Removals

The cheapest option for moving your belongings interstate is probably self-pack or self-service removals.

There are many advantages to moving this way, not least is the control you have over what goes where and how your belongings are packed and handled.

There are companies that pride themselves on providing an outstanding service in moving your family interstate or long distance across Australia.

Basically, you hire the size container that you need, a driver delivers it to you and collects it when you are ready and the loaded container is transported interstate by rail. It is possible to hire manpower from a local service to help with the loading if you think this will be needed or Dad can rope in a few of his friends in exchange for some beer, this could be invaluable if one of you will be running around after toddlers on moving day!

Full-service removals and backload removal services

Alternatively, if you prefer and if your budget allows you can choose a full-service removal whereby everything is taken care of for you, from packing to loading the container to transportation, and then unloading at the other end.

Or, at the other end of the scale, you can choose a backload removal service. With this type of service, a discounted rate is offered for you to utilise space in a truck or container that a company is using to transport goods interstate but is not completely full. You have to be flexible about times and dates as you are basically sharing the container with others, and there is a risk that items could become damaged or get mixed up because someone else is loading them.

In advance of moving day

You will want to do everything you can to prevent any damage to your belongings when you move and you might want to consider additional insurance to cover your house move. In any case, the key to a smooth move interstate is to get organised well in advance.

Seasonal clothing can be packed months before the move, and it’s never too soon to clear out the garage, shed, or loft.

Make lists of everything you need to do and whenever you have a quiet moment, you can tick an item off. Prepare children for the move by explaining to them in simple terms what is going on and let them get their friend’s address details so that they can stay in touch.

As moving day approaches, call utility companies, your bank, and contact Australia Post about redirecting your mail.

Preparations as moving day approaches

Remember when you pack the container that the first piece of furniture you load will be the last one you unload, so bear this in mind if you can’t live without the toddler bed or cot.

Pack a bag with the things you will all need on the day and remember that regardless of the stress you are under on moving day, they will want their usual comforters, food, drinks and toys.

Dedicate some time and effort to finding some activities to keep them occupied and hide away some puzzle books or toys so that they are a nice surprise for when you are busy.

With young children, it is essential that you consider every eventuality!

  • Great tips. Think I’ll do it even easier when next I move – I’m going to get rid of just about everything and start off anew. The costs will probably be about the same as I’d need a team just to move my big heavy table.

  • If you use a good reputable company who travels interstate regularly it may be cheaper if they know they have a load to come back. One tip – they don’t batteries being packed in loads as long distance friction can cause fires. There has been too many incidents where that has happened. When they pack such items they remove all batteries. Most companies will give you boxes, paper to wrap fragile items etc. to use. When you have unpacked the cartons, fold them flat, call the company and they will pick them up from you. Well mine did and so did the company a neighbour used.

  • I used the same removalist company twice and each time I packed as much as I could to save time (and money). They did a good job both times, but the second time overcharged me by claiming they had taken longer than they actually had.

  • I didn’t know there were quite a few options. The train and the container I definitely had no clue about or the sharing of truck space with others

  • I’ve only moved interstate once and am not looking forward to doing it again! We did it all ourselves. Packed up the boxes and had them picked up. Then we jam packed up our car and shipped that off too. Mum dad and bub flew :)
