Are you considering a unique baby name? Are you looking for a special name to help your baby stand out from the class.

Unique baby names mean different things to different people. Perhaps you want a traditional baby name that you can bring back in style. Or perhaps a foreign baby name to suit your exotic baby. Some parents these days choose a literally a unique baby name, by making up a new name.

But before you commit to your uncommon baby name, here are three tests you should do to make sure you won’t regret your decision.

  1. Go to the local playground and shout the baby name 5 times. Shout it loud. Be proud. How does it sound? Does it feel good? Don’t worry if people look at you funny. You will be doing this for years to come. So it is a good idea to test it out before committing to the baby name.  It may be a bad sign if any dogs come running to you.

  1. Let it stew for a while. I used one potential unique baby name as my email password for a few weeks. Your baby will have to live with this name for a long time, so you should take your time making the decision. Write the name on a piece of paper. Look at the paper each day for a week. If it is your favourite baby name for a whole week running then you love it enough to consider using it.

  1. Ask a few people to read the baby name aloud. This one is especially important if you are making up your own unique baby name or going for something so rare that people haven’t seen it before. Normally I don’t recommend asking for opinions on baby names. So be clear you just want to know how they would pronounce it. If they have trouble pronouncing the name you may need to rethink. If you don’t want to reveal your unique baby name idea to family and friends before the baby is born you could ask your hairdresser or dentist.

Obviously all the usual baby naming tips also apply to uncommon names. Check the initials to make sure they don’t spell a bodily function. Search the Internet for the name to make sure there isn’t an ax-murdering-porn-star. Does the name work with the last name?

I recommend keeping a top ten name list while you are pregnant. Then on the day the baby arrives you can see what suits them.

And the most important tip – enjoy naming your baby!

  • We went with something a bit different but not weird.

  • Some baby names are indeed unique. Others are just plain weird. I suggest parents have a serious think before they decide what to name their children

  • LOL funny suggestions but I think if you love a name you should use it.

  • Great information, I did what you called “Let it stew for a while.” I used the name as my password and wrote it in my dairy and said it loud. Thanks for sharing the article.

  • Good advice on baby naming. I like names that can be used throughout life, some names seem like only for the young or old, or middle aged so that was part of my criteria in naming my child.

  • My hubby and I discussed baby names ever since we decided we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. We had set baby names for either gender, and kept them until I got pregnant, then looked over them again and we still loved them
    them.
We now have a baby girl Evelyn Amanda May. We decided a name we both love, a name that means something to both of us, and a family tradition from his family.

    • oh that name sounds adorable. love the name evelyn

  • We went with a name that wasn’t unique, but it wasn’t very common either. When I suggested the name to hubby, he told me that he liked it to and that it was his mother’s middle name. My mother-in-law knew we were having a girl and kept pestering us to tell us what our chosen name was, but we didn’t tell. And she didn’t guess! She even asked if it was her mother’s name – Gert – which it wasn’t!

  • I chose names that were not plain but were not unique somewhere in the middle I guess. I didn’t really want names that were plain like Matt, John and James so we chose some names that were not used by many of our family and friends but would be common enough that people could spell them.

  • Our son’s name was different. We have a longer surname, so I felt it was important to say the entire name out loud often to make sure it sounded okay.

  • Also, check initials and say the full name out loud.
I gave a unique name for number one. The spelling had to be modified before submitting the form.

  • Very good ideas, I like them.

  • Just make sure that the name you choose is not a nightmare for your child to spell at school. jacqulineshneesajay might sound great to you but when all the other kids in grade 1 can write and spell their names on there own and your little darling is struggling its a huge knock to her confidence.

  • I’m pregnant and having trouble with picking a name so I think this app would be awesome to try out. I can’t upload it as my phone hasn’t got the storage on here for a 7+ but great idea
