A mother will face court after her baby was hospitalised with seizures when he allegedly consumed the drug ice.

The 21-month-old boy tested positive for having consumed methylamphetamine, known as ‘ice’, after he was taken to Wollongong Hospital in NSW suffering seizures in January this year, reports 7 NEWS.

The boy had slept alone in his mum’s room the previous evening, where it is possible he had access to the drugs, police say.

He is now in the care of NSW Family and community Services.

UPDATE – The woman failed to appear in court claiming she is ‘too sick’ to make an appearance.

Magistrate Susan McGowan granted the adjournment in court on Wednesday, with the case expected to return to court on September 14.

“I note the offence is alleged to have occurred on January 25 and the child is in [external] care, so there’s no immediate danger to the little one, so a two-week adjournment is not putting anyone at risk,” Ms McGowan said.

The 27-year-old Koonawarra woman has been charged with a child abuse offence and six counts of drug possession.

If she fails to show at court for a second time, a warrant could be issued for her arrest.

More details to come…

  • Why isn’t she in remand? She was also found in possession of drugs. Saying the toddler could have accessed the drugs himself means she was also neglectful in leaving them where he could reach them. The toddler may have permanent damage from the drugs. No more custody of her toddler or visits. If she has another baby he/she should immediately taken into care

  • I really don’t understand why people destroy themselves and others for the sake of a high that we know has such devastating consequences.

  • i think with this drug problem that all expecting parents need to be drug tested at antenatal appointments and closely monitored. When my prems were in the special care nursery there were babies withdrawing from their parent’s drugs, so pai ful for them and scary

  • One of my foster daughters was 3 when she was removed out of her parents care. Both parents used drugs, I don’t know what she has seen but at least she experienced neglect. My youngest foster daughter was on Methadone for quite some weeks after she was born. Drugs is so addictive and destroys a lot. So many families ripped apart because of that.

  • I like how the mother is trying to make excuses for it. “He was sleeping in my room, must’ve woken up and got hold of it.” Seriously mum, that’s the best you got? Any responsible, sensible caring mother wouldn’t have that stuff in the same house as children. No excuses will excuse you, you are an idiot and font deserve to have children
