A two-year-old boy has died in hospital after being crushed by a brick wall near Toowoomba, south-east Queensland.

At 6.00pm on Tuesday evening the brick wall fell on the toddler at a property in Irongate.

Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations supervisor Stephen Johns said the boy has suffered critical head injuries.

He reported that ambulance workers treated the boy at the scene, and then he was flown directly to Lady Cilento Hospital in Brisbane.

“Paramedics were able to treat the patient on the scene and arranged for Careflight Toowoomba to meet our paramedics en route and they further stabilised the patient,” Stephen said.  “It’s traumatic not only for the family, but also for our paramedics that respond to cases like this.”

Careflight confirmed the boy’s necessary flight and added that the boy’s mum accompanied him on the trip and they arrived at the hospital at 8.30pm.  He died this afternoon from his injuries.

It is not known what caused the wall to collapse at this stage and Workplace Health and Safety officers are investigating the incident.

  • Terrible thing to have happened – on the news this morning it said the little boy had been operated on and was now in a stable condition. How awful to have your hopes brought up only to have them dashed later in the day. RIP little two year old – commiserations to the family.

  • I wonder if this is an area in which there has recently been floods or severe drought that has caused earth movement. In this article it doesn’t state how old the wall is. If it is very old it may not have had proper foundations. I have seen part of a very old wall that fell a few days after bed weather. Fortunately nobody was near it when it fell.

  • It does not matter if no one was at fault, a family has lost a joy to them. There will be questions and most will be answered except why, if only. Prayers go out to the family.
