A two-year-old Perth girl has drowned in her neighbour’s pool after chasing her puppy through a hole in the fence.

Latia Rose Cox’s mother thought the little girl was playing inside the Balga house, but tragically found her in the water last month.

The child had followed her puppy outside and managed to squeeze through a small gap in a damaged side fence, reports 7 news.

Latia’s family are now urging pool owners to check their fencing ahead of the launch of the Royal Lifesaving Society’s pool safety awareness campaign.

Her grandmother, Michelle Nelson Cox, said her granddaughter’s death needs to highlight the dangers of children and water.

Sadly last week the mother of a four-year-old girl who drowned in a crowded public pool shared her story to ensure no other families suffer the same tragic heartache. Read that story HERE.

Children can drown in just a few seconds.

Drowning in children under five increased last year.

Tragically 29 children aged 0-4 years drowned in 2016/17, a 32% increase on the previous year, serving as a sobering reminder to parents and pool owners of the need to constantly Keep Watch around water.

Kidsafe Victoria’s summer pool safety tips:
•Never take your eyes off children around water; if you have to leave the water area for any reason, take the children with you.
•Appoint an adult as a designated supervisor, including at BBQ’s and pool parties. Never leave toddlers in the care of older children.
•When you are supervising toddlers, ensure that you are within arms’ reach at all times.
•Ensure that your pool safety barrier is secure and in proper working order.
•Never prop the pool gate open, this allows children easy and often unsupervised access to the pool area.
•Learn CPR and update your skills regularly. Resuscitation posters kept near pools are a good reminder.

CHECK fencing is an important tip as well.

  • Such a tragedy and loss of a youmg child who had her life ahead of her.
This also proves that boundary fences should be checked regularly and well maintained – not just pool fences

    • We have to do regular maintenance to our fences.
