A toddler found walking alone to kindergarten told Police she couldn’t wake mummy.

The Mirror reports that an off-duty police officer in the UK saw the child walking alone and stopped to ask what she was doing, the child said she was “going to nursery” because she “can’t wake mummy up”.

The girl led him back to her home, where her mum, Nicolla Rushton, 30, was discovered dead. There are no suspicious circumstances.

Chief Inspector Steve Maskrey, from Staffordshire Police, has since praised his officer and said his actions showed police “are never off duty.”
He said: “This is a brilliant piece of work by him that shows that we are never off duty.

“The officer and his wife took the time to look after the little girl and stay with her until emergency services arrived.

“Sadly nothing could be done to help the woman.

“My thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased at this difficult time.

“The little girl is now safe with family.

“I must also praise the community who all came together and helped the police with their inquiries. Thank you.”

Nicolla’s brother Anthony Rushton, 28, said: “The family just needs time to grieve at the moment.

“My mum is absolutely heartbroken and it’s too much to talk about at the moment.

Staffordshire Police said they were called to the house by colleagues from West Midlands Ambulance Service after Ms Rushton was found, shortly before 11am.

She was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after they arrived.

A spokesman for the West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “An ambulance and a paramedic officer were sent to the scene.

“On arrival, crews discovered a woman patient.

“Unfortunately, it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save her and she was confirmed dead at the scene.”

A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said Ms Rushton was very ‘quiet’, and added: “She just kept herself to herself.

“I am gobsmacked, I didn’t know her that well but from what I saw she seemed very happy and loved her little girl.

“She was the quiet type and it is just really upsetting.

“It is so shocking when it happens on your doorstep.

“It is just awful.”

Our hearts go out to the family and that poor precious little girl.

  • I very self-contained little girl. Hopefully her family are in a position to care for her.

  • Oh my gosh how sad. Luckily it was the police who found the child and not someone else.

  • How very sad. Lucky the girl was found by the off-duty policeman before anything happened to her. This is a real fear of mine too, if something happened to me as a single mum.

  • What a sad story. I teach my kids to call 000 in these circumstances but she was probably too young to do that.

  • Poor woman. And luckily that nothing bad happened to the little girl while wandering around.

  • In this case it is fortunate that the little girl was able to open the door, probably also to the point that she was able to unlock the door. The handles on the doors of the later built homes are lower than the older ones. In this case it is a blessing. (It has always been a fear of mine that a child may venture outside and possibly wander because the majority of houses don’t have front fences /and or gates. I hope they found a trustworthy relative or close friend to take care of the little girl – permanently if possible. Moving between foster homes would be a disaster for her. The trauma she has already endured may always stay with her. There is no mention of her age. I still remember my Grandma and how sick she was before she passed away. Fortuantely my parents were able to find somebody to care for my little brother and I the last week or so of her life.
