Hello!

What a nightmare for any parent!

A 2-year old girl has sadly died after being run over in the driveway of an apartment block in Queensland.

It is understood that the young girl ran in front of a car driven by her father as he reversed out of the complex in Garnet Street, Clayfield, around 5:30pm on Friday.

The toddler was treated by paramedics at the scene before being transported to Brisbane’s Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital. Tragically, she passed away from her injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The Courier Mail reported that neighbours had seen the little girl’s father cradling his daughter’s injured body immediately after she had been hit.

The family was reportedly in the process of moving into a unit at the Garnet Street complex at the time of the accident.

A Queensland Police spokesperson said officers from the Forensic Crash Unit were investigating the incident.

There are simple precautions that you can take to prevent accidents like this one.

Driver Knowledge Tests provide some important tips:

Simple checks

Ensure an adult or a responsible older child (mid-late teens) is keeping an eye on younger children at all times.
Check behind your vehicle before you reverse.
Make sure your kids are all in the car and belted up (it may sound ridiculous but if you’re stressed, it can be easy to leave a kid behind)
If you are the only adult in the house and you need to move a car, put your children in the car with you while you move it.

Technology

If you have them, pay attention to your reversing camera or sensors always.

Gates

Gate off your garden from the driveway and if you have guests visitors or a tradesperson visiting, make sure you know where your kids are before they leave.

No Playtime In The Car

The car is not a play area. Don’t allow your kids to play in the car – they could release the handbrake and the car could roll and cause potential harm.

Educate

Teach your kids from a young age about the dangers of reversing cars and to always pay attention in driveways and parking lots.

  • How dreadful and tragic, I cannot believe people cannot learn to keep kids away from cars, hang onto their hands and do not let them out of your sight around cars ever.

  • Very, very sad. Hope the family can get support through this difficult period.

  • How sad. I’m so paranoid about making sure my husband and I lock the door behind us. Especially my husband. He has a hilux with a canopy and you can’t see a thing out of it. Its so easy to see how this happens.

  • So sad. No blame but parents need to be so much more vigilant. Make sure the kids aren’t outside and can’t get outside where cars are coming and going
