An unsuspecting father discovered his iPad had locked itself for almost half a century after his three-year-old son got hold of it…

Evan Osnos, father and writer for The New Yorker, posted to Twitter to ask his followers to help him unlock his iPad. Evan says that his three-year-old son got hold of the device and proceeded to enter the incorrect passcode over and over again, eventually locking the device for almost half a century…

Pushed To The Limit

Evan couldn’t believe his eyes when he looked at his iPad and saw it had been locked for 26 million minutes. “Uh, this looks fake but alas, it’s our iPad today after our three-year-old repeatedly tried to unlock. Ideas?” he wrote on Twitter. After doing some research and asking Apple tech experts for advice, Evan discovered that erasing all content from the iPad and restarting it was the only option. “If you forgot your passcode, or if a message says your device is disabled, follow these steps to remove your passcode,” Apple said. “Data on the device will no longer be available and you’ll need to erase your device.” The bad news is, if Evan is anything like us, he won’t have diligently backed up his iPad. A whole lot of photos may be lost forever…

If you needed a reminder to sort out your iCloud and think of a safe place to hide your devices, let Evan’s story be a warning. You could be waiting a long time to watch Netflix if you don’t!

  • My grandson has his own tablet. He once managed to lock everyone out of it. It took his dad ages to figure it out and to get access once again.

  • Oh dear. My grandson successfull managed to accidentally wipe all the movies and shows my son out on a tablet for him. He just fluked pressing the wrong buttons. Very frustrating though

  • I don’t see how this could happen. First time you get locked out for 1 minute. The next is for 5 and it gradually goes up. How long was that child alone with the iPad?

  • Good grief, surely there’s another way other than erasing everything. Usually you get locked out after a few tries for a certain time, not continuously add to the minutes. I don’t have an iPad though so wouldn’t know how they work, just other devices/websites.

  • I wonder how long the child was left alone with the i pad to try that many times to unlock it that it locked for that long? Seems funny and will be a great story for the 18th or 21st, but probably isn’t very funny now lol

  • Think the new rules for children and devices might just come in handy in future.

  • Yes I did for my kids. We are catholic, and we wanted our kids in catholic high schools. Best thing we ever did for both kids

  • I wonder how many times the toddler tried to put the password in. Does the guy’s Provider have a record of passwords. I know mine does but you have to answer a lot of questions for security purposes.
