Tom Hanks says recording his emotional final lines as Sheriff Woody for Toy Story 4 was “pretty profound”.

Toy Story 4 features returning favourites such as Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), Bo Peep (Annie Potts) and Rex (Wallace Shawn), as well as introducing new toys which feature the voices of Keanu Reeves and Tony Hale.

Hanks was asked how he felt while in the recording booth for Woody’s final lines, and he revealed Tim Allen had warned him the final scene is so emotional he could barely get through it and he was “still recovering” from it.

Allen warned him: “Wait until you see those last pages. Tough one, tough one.”

“And it was,” he confirmed to Ellen. “The last few sessions were — we’re saying goodbye to Woody and Buzz and Bonnie’s room and Andy and everybody. It was emotional. So I had to, I had to turn my back on them all.”

Speaking at a press conference in Orlando, Florida, Hanks said he asked director Josh Cooley if he could break with standard practice and turn his back on him to face the wall while recording the scenes, explaining: “I didn’t want to have any self-consciousness for what I knew was going to be the … last few hours I was spending with that movie”.

“And when it came to pass I felt as though I was on the other side of the river waving to everybody I had left back in the old country. It was pretty profound.”

The 62-year-old actor said the final scene was voiced in the same booth where he recorded the original Toy Story.

“There’s so much muscle memory that goes into it. You drive into the lot, through the same gate, you park in the same spot they had for you, then you go through the same doors, get in your car and you drive back through.

“And you think ‘I have recorded the last moment of the current Toy Story.”

  • There’s a life lesson in this for kids that comes from a point of view they can understand

  • I think movies that invoke real feelings, even sadder ones, can be great for kids. Life is full of ups and downs, and showing only happy movies shelters them from reality. I used to cry when the horse in The NeverEnding Story sunk into the Swamp of Sadness. It really was sad.

  • I suspect it may have been more emotional for him knowing the ends of previous movies than some who may watch the latest one. I love this type of movie.
