Trying to lose weight is the most difficult when the party season begins. There’s no more covering up and hiding under winter clothing. In summer we want to feel confident and proud of our body. And, we all want to lose weight before summer begins, and maintain that weight loss all summer long. Unfortunately, this is put to the test at every Christmas party. And, there can be a fair few.

You can stay focused on making sure you take care of your health, stay committed to your weight loss goals and still have a good time! It’s easy, but just takes a little focus.

Top 10 Diet Guidelines for the Festive Season:

1. Drink water, and stay hydrated! In Australia it’s hot around this time of year, so drinking enough water is important, regardless of whether you’re planning on having a few drinks. But if you are, drinking enough water before an event and having spacers throughout the night is vital.

2. When you’re at a cocktail party adopt a no eat policy. Before you go out, make time to eat a substantial protein rich meal. Include a lean protein such as salmon or turkey, with lots of above ground vegetables such as broccoli and spinach, and vitamin B-rich brown rice.

3. Drink clear spirits and soda. Clear spirits are lower in calories and easily burnt off, leaving little residue in our system. The most important rule to keep in mind is to never mix your spirits with sugary drinks, these are loaded with calories you just do not need.

Beverages in order of preference:

1. vodka and soda with fresh lime;

2. gin and tonic;

3. other spirits, such as scotch and soda;

4. red wine, white wine, and champagne.

And, if you’re on a diet, just dont drink beer. Beer will add bulk. Stat.

4. Keep up your vitamin B levels. Include vitamin B rich foods such as brown rice and miso soup before you go out. Vitamin B helps the body to metabolise the alcohol out. Also remember to eat these foods the next day for a quick recovery.

5. Will anyone know if you are at a party and drinking mineral water? Who says that you can’t have fun when you’re sober? Prove to yourself that you can be outgoing, without having to rely on being a little tipsy.

6. When a tray of food passes you by, ask yourself – do I really need it? Keep track of whether you are hungry at all, or just filling in time. Consider how many calories are in what is being offered. It could be 100 calories in every mouthful. This adds up to a fair amount if you’re watching your weight. If you need to eat, and aren’t sure which to choose; pick on anything raw. For example, nibble on crudités, salads, or sashimi, and avoid any of fried or starchy foods.

7. Order a meal that is balanced and substantial from the menu when dining out. You will indefinitely avoid late night binges.

8. If you have dinner plans all week long, don’t fall into the trap of ordering dessert every single night. Sure, indulge in desserts on the occasion. But, most nights finish your meal with a herbal tea or decaffeinated coffee.

9. If you are heading to a party and really want to let your hair down and have copious amounts of careless fun, then make sure you exercise your butt off that day. Then, relax and reward yourself. Live a little, because life is short after all. You don’t want to look fantastic with a killer body, and not enjoy the body you have earned.

10. Girls, wear your heels. Wearing your high heels works your calves. And, very important – dance. You’ll burn calories, and you won’t even realize.
