Hello!

Not everyone likes to train at the gym – and that’s ok.

It’s not unusual to feel uncomfortable working out in a room full of strangers. For many people on the go, like new mums, workaholics and anyone that leads a busy lifestyle, finding time to get to the gym is a mission. Thus, training at home has boomed in popularity over the years.

It’s not just about the practical benefits of having what you need at home. You can do your workout in the comfort of your own house, watch TV during your workout (or blast music as loud as you want), supervise bub or younger children or squeeze in a quick 20 minutes between work without having to waste time driving to the gym.

It’s convenient – and who doesn’t love convenience these days!? But the benefits of investing in fitness exercise equipment at home can be great for your wallet too. In many cases, setting up things at home can offer more value than a gym membership; and then there’s no excuse not to commit to those health and fitness goals!

Here’s a few must-have pieces to get you started:

1. Vibration platform

If your fitness goal is boost your body’s muscle strength and tone, in the quickest amount of time possible, then a Vibration Platform is your weapon of choice. Like the name suggests, it’s a vibrating platform which you can stand or sit on to assist with workout exercises. Because of the rapid vibrations the machine creates, you’re stimulating muscle fibre to contract and relax at a speed of up to 50 contractions per second!

Vibration training is a technique that can be utilised at low or high intensity, depending on your fitness level and goals. The platform is designed to reduce back pain, so it’s perfect for chronic sufferers or anyone in rehabilitation and exercises all your body’s muscles at the same time.

This means you’re covering cardio, resistance, core and flexibility all on the one piece of equipment. The result is fat cells are burned off quickly, cellulite is reduced and a slimmer waist line is on the cards.

2. A multi-gym

Multi-gyms, or multi-stations, are your best bet if you want something big with big results. Whilst the initial investment in these babies is pricey, the rewards you reap are huge. And it’s easy to see why it’s one of the market’s top sellers. These machines can come in a variety of sizes – some offer literally everything, others are more compact and tailored but all are beneficial for those fitness enthusiasts that want an all-in-one piece with a challenge.

Combining fixed-weights for a full upper and body workout, multi-gyms can target all areas. Look out for one that has at least an exercise for every major body part including your legs, shoulders, chest, back and arms. These machines are renowned for their total-body blast and are ideal for people that want full-body training. Leg presses, leg curls, chin up, chest presses, triceps extensions and lateral raises are all usually included in a multi-station.

3. Step machine

Like a treadmill, but with more incline and a higher dose of challenge to kick those fitness goals! The popularity of these machines stem from their ability to burn a lot of calories, without burning yourself out too much in the process. Instead of one wide track for a treadmill, Tread Climbers have two narrow tracks that move over long pedals. They incline at about 40%, but can be adjusted to suit your fitness level and goals.

These beasts of the fitness world kick butt because they’re a rapid calorie burner, burning 3.5 more calories than your standard treadmill. They’re safe for all fitness levels and ages, making them a popular choice for mums trying to get back into fitness after a break.

They use less space than standard treadmills so ideal for small home gyms, work hard at targeting specific muscles by adjusting the incline and utilise a heart rate monitor grip pulse on the handlebars of some models to track your progress.

4. Crosstrainer

This is by no means a new machine in the world of fitness, but its health benefits make it one of the best additions for home gyms. As far as cardio exercise equipment goes, elliptical and treadmills are the most common. And they’re the best investment for men and women that want to work out at home to burn calories and give their bodies a muscle and tone boost.

The best thing about elliptical machines is you can mix up your workouts and add variety easily. Many people get bored of standard fitness routines, which is normal. An elliptical can offer a low-impact workout and be tailored through altering ramp height, resistance level and speed stride speed.

As opposed to its cardio competition, the treadmill, elliptical machines are friendlier on your joints and back because your feet never leave the pedal.

5. Multifunctional strength trainer

Like a multi-station, but multifunctional strength trainers take fitness to a whole new level. Designed for the extreme fitness fanatic or females and males that thrive on a real challenge, the limits are literally endless for these machines. There’s a lot of MSTs on the market so you need to be careful about finding one that works with your budget and fitness needs.

All of them though, are based on the functional training theory. The core parts of FT include boosting muscle memory, providing low impact workouts, improving balance and posture, reducing injury risks, increasing flexibility and coordination and making everyday life easier.

Maintaining a regular fitness routine doesn’t have to be hard. And when you commit to a purchase of the right piece of equipment for your home and health, it’s even easier to apply yourself to the process. When the results start showing, you know your investment was worth it too!

  • Interesting article. I’m surprised at the items that get a mention… I thought this was going to be about using everyday objects around the house and the 5 basic pieces of equipment that you might need which fit into a drawer!.. eg stretch/resistance band; dumbells, multi-function fold up house step (suitable for those step ups); slipping rope and maybe a medicine ball/kettle bell… so much can be done with just your bodyweight and then adding some resistance…. I’d do the small things before going out and buying the big.
