Triple-0 emergency voice calls in numerous states across Australia may be going unanswered after a Telstra cable was cut.

The issue has resulted in “intermittent” receipt of calls to the police, ambulance and fire brigade number.

Anyone needing urgent help can call the Police Assistance Line – 131 444 – if they can’t get through on 000.

Telstra has blamed the problem on a suspected lightening strike in NSW.

The cable, running between Orange and Bowral, was severed at 2.05am AEST on Friday “by an unknown party”, Telstra said.

“We’re working closely with emergency services in those states,” Telstra posted on Twitter.

  • Let’s hope this is repaired soon – lightening strikes do cause problems.

  • It is a pity there is no back up alternative plan should this happen. It’s sure to happen again sometime.

  • A huge problem that needs to be fixed now!

  • This is just ludicrous – surely there should be a ‘back-up’ line should the main line fail for any reason?? I sincerely hope no-one has suffered during this outage!

  • That’s no good

  • Oh, this is worrying. I hope they will be able to solve the problem soon.
