Jaeylyn and Luis Salgado are twins with a difference.  They don’t share the same birthday or even the same birth year.

The twins were born on either side of the new year in hospital in San Diego.  Jaelyn arrived first at 11.59pm on 31 December 2015 and Luis followed her at 12.02am 1 January 2016.

Dad, Luis Salgado spoke to NBC San Diego about the excitement surrounding the births:

“We were actually watching the clock. We wanted to see if we were one of the first ones,” The family initially had a cesarean section scheduled for the 6 January, but doctors called Mum Maribel Salgado in earlier due to one of the babies presenting in a breech position.

Nurse Lynnette also spoke of the births with NBC San Diego:

“It’s very unusual and it’s very special. I haven’t seen it in all my 34 years of nursing.”

Baby Luis and Jaelyn join 3-year-old big sister Isabella.

  • Imagine: If they are identical, are in the same classes at school and have unique birth times as this, knowing they are twins but have different birthdays may cause even more confusion. I can see the one born on New Years Eve telling the other one that he is a year older until he realises the true circumstances.

  • I think its fantastic. Each child gets their own birthday to feel special. Kids at school may be a little confused in early years tho haha

  • This is beautiful – the twins will still have that “twin” bond but don’t have to share a birthday! I’m sure the parents were just thankful to have two healthy babies in the end
