There is a movement happening on Twitter right now that has been started by abortion rights activists Amelia Bonow, Lindy West and Kimberly Morrison. It’s all about challenging the stigma attached to abortions and it’s aim is to allow women who make the choice to have an abortion share their stories, in their own words, without shame.

It was started as a response to US Congress’s proposed cancellation of funding of women’s healthcare organisation Planned Parenthood.

Though it seems that it has caused more of a fight than a conversation and people are certainly fired up about it.

Here are some of the responses that people have been posting on Twitter, some are in agreement with the movement, and others venomently against it. Please be warned that some of the posts might cause distress.

Amelia Bonow started the movement with a piece she published, you can view that here, though she starts this piece by stating:

“We’ve been brainwashed to think we must regret our abortions. I have a good heart, and feel only gratitude for mine”

  • It is people’s rights to voice whatever they want to – freedom of speech. However, I am pro-choice with abortions. I have had a friend who has had an abortion because she knew she couldn’t afford to have a baby, the guy she was with she certainly did not want to have another baby with and also she would not have found the heart to give a baby up for adoption.
People have all different circumstances. But I believe it should only be done if really needed to be done.

  • I’m fine with all of that, and in fact completely support it. I have seen video clips of a lady that survived a late term abortion (7 months I think), and was disabled as a consequence. Her mother was given a saline injection that was supposed to bring on an abortion, but failed to fully do what it was supposed to do. Also with the U.S Planned Parenthood there is some conjecture around whether or not the organs of late term abortions are harvested. What happens in the USA and Australia in regards to this issue are very different. I want to make it clear that for the most part I’m pro choice, I just urge people before jumping on any support bandwagon either for or against to fully investigate what exactly goes on.

  • I don’t think I could have an abortion myself but I am definitely pro choice. We never know what it’s like to live anyone’s journey so we are never in a position to judge.

  • heavy stuff – each to their own decisions….

  • Pro choice here. We need to stop making women feel guilty about decisions that which revolve around THEIR bodies.

  • yep a very controversial topic, for sure.

  • No one should judge as you don’t know what that person is going through.

  • Abortion is often touted as being the birth control option for the irresponsible and for those who don’t value life. But what about women that have been through the horror of rape, to find they are then pregnant. Or the women who for medical reasons are told by doctors that a termination is the safest option for them. There is a lot to weigh up and I don’t think it is for others to judge. Women that choose to use these services are offered counselling and are being seen by medical practitioners. This is a contentious issue but I really think it is an individual case and not for outsiders to throw more hurt and prejudice at.

  • After having three beautiful babies and one miscarriage it’s hard for me to understand why and how a woman could abort their baby. More and more research is showing that a foetus is a human being with unique DNA right from conception. When you have sex you make a choice to risk a pregnancy and if it happens it’s your responsibility. It’s a human life! I can’t believe women are telling us it’s acceptable to kill a little innocent life just for the sake of convenience. Sure, it’s not good to judge when you don’t know the full story but someone needs to stand up for the rights and protection of a vulnerable, dependent unborn child.

  • I think it’s wrong for people to judge they don’t know why and what’s going on in their life.

  • i think that you do what you have to do. I know that it is a life that we are talking about But the mother has to be in the right state of mind to be able to raise a child.

  • I totally agree with what Melanie has written below, no one should judge unless they have walked in your shoes

    • I agree too; this is not a black and white issue; there is plenty of grey and no one does walk in your shoes or has to live your life. I am somewhat shocked at the vicious verbal attacks this issue has received on other media platforms.

  • It is up to the person whether to abort or not. Me personally only if the mother is in danger and then really to think of it. Having twice being asked to abort babies my answer was no. The first one was told the baby would not survive, still thought it was its choice and the baby decided. The other one I had cancer and they wanted me to abort to have treatment, the answer no. so everyone has the right but agree using it as birth control then no.
