In shocking news this afternoon it’s been reported by the New Zealand Herald that two students at an exclusive school in New Zealand have had their throats cut during a performance of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

The boys, both 16 years old, were taken to Auckland hospital where it is believed they are in a stable condition and will be discharged either today or tomorrow.

A police spokesperson has said that it doesn’t appear to be intentional, saying “It’s not a criminal inquiry. In this instance the play is not the reality,”

Steve Cole who is head of St Kentigern College where the incident took place has made a statement saying “We are distressed about what happened last night and are conducting a thorough investigation. We are pleased that both boys are in a stable condition and have been talking with both their families.”

The production has been put on hold until further notice as detectives investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

  • How are 2 boys throats cut in a school performance?
Surely there could have been safer props used!
How will this affect the schools insurance? Are the boys covered by the schools negligence?
I hope a thorough investigation is conducted because this is completely unacceptable!
I wish both boys a speedy recovery & hope no-one else has to go through something like this.
A terrible accident that could have indeed been avoided with some common sense on the prop managers behalf!

  • Um, how on earth did this happen? What was the production? Why were they in a position to have their throats cut? So many questions. Thankfully, they’re both okay.

  • Wow how horrific! Taking method acting too far. Who was in charge of props? It would be interesting to know the full details

  • Sounds as though the wrong props were handed out to the actors.

  • sounds like teenagers trying to be toooo realistic in ortrayal of sweeny todd. Why have real knife cpable of cutting on set? There are many authentic looking pretend knives with retractable blade would have still created effect without harm. We have to remember that youth needs guidance and suppervision in such an occassio. Glad both are ok and warning to others
