The Lyrics of a Popular Nursery Rhyme Have Been Changed and people are not happy!

The Lyrics For ‘Baa Baa Black Sheep’ have reportedly changed to “Baa Baa Sheep Sheep”.

A discussion on TODAY this morning saw the guests and hosts argue that black IS a colour. You can get black sheep. It is JUST a colour!

The origin of the original nursery rhyme had nothing to do with race or colour. Originally from England the nursery rhyme is thought to be about new taxes imposed on the wool trade.

It is believed that this wool tax forms the background to the rhyme. One-third of the price of each bag, or sack sold, was for the king (the master); one-third to the monasteries, or church (the dame); and none to the poor shepherd (the little boy who cries down the lane) who had tirelessly tended and protected the flock.

People shared their opinions on the TODAY Facebook page saying –

“Oh FFS! Both black and white sheep exist!”

“Not in my house , always will be Baa Baa black sheep !”

“For goodness sake, the world has gone stark raving mad. Black is a colour!!!!!! What would you call the Little Black Dress now?????”

“I feel sorry for future generations of children who deal with this politically precise world.”

“Political correctness has gone to far and it’s just rediculous some of the things that you can’t say no to now. Crazy old world we now live in.”

Is this political correctness gone mad?

  • This is beyond ridiculous! Where is the innocence in nursery rhymes that have been around for many years? Whoever started all this nonsense in political correctness is a complete joke ! Go back to the old ways , the old days of the cute funny nursery rhymes..instead of these newly worded nonsense rhymes.

  • It is going too far, or PC gone mad in my humble opinion. I remember being in the south of America and was warned to ask for a coffee without milk if I wanted a black coffee.

  • I think some people need a reality check – you cannot change (nor should you be expected to) every instance where the word black is used just so it doesn’t offend some people. I really think everyone is so quick to jump on this “oh that offends me bandwagon” that they really don’t think about whether it truly is affecting them or they are just going along with the rest of the herd!

It will always baa baa black sheep and I look forward to when I have grandkids and can sing it to them!

  • Stop messing with the children’s nursery rhymes its something that is easy to join generations together

  • Where is this school? I seem to remember this coming up for discussion a while ago. Won’t change how people sing it. I’ll still sing the old version to my grandkids

  • Baa. Baa. Sheep. Sheep. is kind of catchy! And much better than the ‘baa baa rainbow sheep’ that the kids started singing after one day at school… political correctness gone wrong? Well, the idiom ‘black sheep’ is worse, used as it is to label family members as ‘bad’ and matching that with a colour. Probably should be making more fuss about that one.
