The moment a driver rescued a 17-month-old toddler wandering out onto a busy road has been caught on camera.

Filmed using a dash camera, a toddler can be seen walking into the path of traffic in Villawood, in Sydney’s west.

The driver, Gary Dring, quickly swings his car across the lane to block other vehicles and leaps to the rescue.

He jumps from his vehicle and snatches the oblivious child from the road and hands it to another child who runs from a nearby property and carries the toddler away.

He told 7 News the parents of the child hadn’t believed police the incident had taken place, and it took him showing them the footage for them to accept it.

Police referred the matter to family and community services.

The family declined to comment.

  • It can happen so fast – thanks for your story. You always have to be vigilant on the road and certainly with children who are there one minute and gone the next.

  • Lucky he was around to take her back off the road.

  • An impatient driver could so easily have swung into that lane to get past and taken out that kid! Thank goodness the driver has the foresight to block the lane and the rest of the traffic seemed at a standstill :/

  • Lucky that man was watching the road. I hope the family are grateful

  • What a nice guy to stop and make sure he is ok …. shame on the parents not keeping an eye on their child and not running out to say thanks!!

  • How scarey was it watching this?! Just look at the amount of traffic on that road! That baby is very lucky to be alive I say

  • So scary. We keep our front door key locked to help prevent accidents!

  • Luckily that that man saw it and intervened!!

  • Both the children should not be in the front yard unsupervised.
No front gates closed. From the photo I’m not sure if there is a gate on the right side or the way the fence is built. The older boy would be able to reach the door handles and locks but I don’t think the toddler could unless it was fitted even lower than the standard ones are now. Under some council laws you aren’t allowed a front fence. There are ways of making sections of your front yard including your driveway secure.

  • my toddler would do the exact same thing, we have to use dead bolts on our doors because he can unlock the usual locks, he tries to chase the postie up the road every single day!
