Consumer Protection share a warning to all parents, before using a cot, carry out these simple safety checks. Older cots that do not meet these standards should not be used!

Keeping a baby safe is everyone’s responsibility, Consumer Protection WA have put together this informative video on what to look out for with second hand cots.

Always make sure it meets Australian Safety Standards.

Before using a cot it is important to check for the below –

  • Inspect for stability
  • Ensure rails are intact
  • No sharp edges
  • Make sure Nuts and bolts are tight and that all mechanisms are in working order
  • Check that the bars, panels, mattress base and drop sides are firmly attached.
  • Then check the recommended measurements of the cot. (see video)
  • Check there is no risk a child can NEVER become trapped.Watch below.

Consumer Protection WA shares, Cots are supposed to be a place for babies to rest and sleep safely but Kidsafe WA reports that 51 children attended Princess Margaret Hospital in 2014/2015 with cot-related injuries.

If you buy or receive a second-hand cot, it may not meet current Australian safety standards, increasing the risk of injury to any baby placed in that cot.
This video is part of our current community education campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of second hat cots.

It is essential these safety checks are carried out to prevent injury or a tragedy.

  • Kids will spend so much in their cots, that it’s super important the cots meet the safety standards.

  • So so important! Not something you’d necessarily think about!

  • Great reminder for everyone. I know a friend of mine couldn’t donate a cot to charity because there was no safety standard sticker on it

  • A reminder when buying new ones too. They aren’t always 100%. We have never swaddled a newborn in hot weather. They can easily wriggle around and put a foot out the side of the cot. Even a small baby will move about if they get hot. If you put your hand on the mattress where a baby has been sleeping you find it could be really warm, and your baby’s baby may be damp with perspiration even if the airondtioning is on. Having aircondtioning on constantly is not healthy. The motors in domestic ones are not designed to run non-stop 24 hours a day 7 days a week without a break. A lot of businesses turn theirs off overnight too.

  • I kept my kids pram, cot and bassinet I used when they were babies. Plan was for the grandkids to use them. Well, no way would that happen! Firstly, my kids aren’t interested in old stuff, secondly after being in storage for so long, I wasn’t comfortable with them being used anyway
