New advice on what women should eat during pregnancy.

A new warning suggests the food pregnant women eat could put the lives of their unborn babies at risk of disease, reports 7 news.

“A lot of women I see are working full time as well as being pregnant which is fantastic,” said Early Life Nutrition Coalition’s Melanie McGrice.

The new guidelines suggest expectant mums should be eating two pieces of fruit and at least two and half cups of cooked green and orange vegetables every day.

White bread should be replaced with whole grain alternatives and sugary food like cakes and soft drinks should be off the menu.

Neonatologist Dr Adrienne Gordon said pregnant women should not over-indulge on calories, despite long-held beliefs about eating for two.

“It’s important to know the extra calories you need are actually not very much,” he said.

“It’s not eating for two.”

Experts say big changes are needed with around 1 million Australians suffering from type 2 diabetes and the number of children suffering from asthma and food allergies on the rise.

  • Seems like overeating in the first trimester sets your baby up for obesity. Latest news I read on it.

  • I paid more attention to what I was eating and if I was craving something I ate it as that’s what my body needed. In saying that I didn’t touch one single thing from the list that can harm your baby- after all it’s obly 9 months to go without

  • I’m sure this has been the advice for a long time now?

  • The only thing that stopped my Mum being sick all the time – day and night – was when one night in desperation she decided if she was going to vomit that night she was going to enjoy her meal first instead of a strict very low fat diet that she had adhered to for at least 6 months. She decided she wanted Fish & Chips with a few sips of Coca Cola. First night on months she hadn’t been sick during the night. My Dad literally had a bowl at his side of the bed as she would start vomitting before she woke up properly. After that night she went back on her strict diet except for the Coca Cola. She was very rarely sick after that. Prior to that she had been rushed to hospital a few times – once she was unconscious. She wasn’t ever a big eater as far back as I can remember but loved her vegetables, also fruit. She gave up eating the ones that were acidic and others she knew definitely gave her heartburn.

  • Sometimes its a case of eat whatever will stay down. When you have the best intentions at the start and by the end of 9 months the only food you didn’t throw up was weetbix you just have to remember you did the best you can.

    • Oh my! That must be absolutely terrifying!! :-(

  • I wasn’t concerned at all. Even if probably I ate too much, because I put on 16 kilo’s. ;-)
In countries like Japan, doctor advise to not put on more than 8 kilo’s.
