Aussie shoppers have questioned Woolworths’ Earn and Learn promotion, but we think it is the bomb!

The Woolworths promotion, which has been running in schools across Australia since 2011, gives shoppers one sticker for every $10 they spend in the supermarket.

The Geelong Advertiser questioned why shoppers have to spend thousands in order to gain items that retail for as little as $2.

Shopper Alison Wills told the newspaper: ‘When you have a look at how much you really need to spend to earn an item, it does make you question whether the promotion is just to get you in the door.’

Woolworths response

Woolworths responded to the claims telling New Idea Food that they’ve supplied ‘more than $50 million dollars worth of educational resources to schools and Early Learning Centres around the country.’

‘Our Earn & Learn program is one of our biggest community initiatives and it’s always fantastic to see everyone come together to collect stickers to help provide much needed equipment for future generations.

‘The last time we ran this program, schools received 300,000 pieces of new equipment to help them further their learning journey.

‘This year, Woolworths is introducing a ‘Remote Schools Program’ initiative which gives Aussie schools, who are more than 100km from a Woolworths store, the ability to be involved in Earn & Learn.

‘The Earn & Learn program is designed to help all schools across the country. The Remote Schools Program ensures that schools that may not be near a Woolworths store, are not left disadvantaged.

‘We strongly encourage remote schools to opt-in to the program and encourage our customers, who may not be collecting for their kids or their local school, to donate their stickers into the yellow Remote Aussie schools box in-store. This will ensure schools in remote areas can also benefit from the program.’

We think it is a fantastic program. You have to buy your groceries somewhere, so why shouldn’t your school gain some perks from it. And the added bonus, no plastic! The kids score some great new equipment to keep them active and everyone is happy. WINNING!

  • The primary school here does as does the kinder. I love it when the people handing out the stickers give extra ones. Like the other day. “I’ve earned 9″. “Here, have 15″.
