Melbourne teen girls granted right to participate in debutante ball as same sex pair

7 News report Two Year 11 best friends from Melbourne’s north have successfully campaigned to participate in their school debutante ball as same sex partners.

They will be the first in Bundoora Secondary College’s 30-plus year history of coordinating the right of passage event – traditionally a male and female pairing, with ballroom dancing an integral part of the proceedings.

A school representative confirmed a same-sex couple had intended to accompany one another at deb a previously year, but left the school before the event.

Although not a couple, the best friends, wanted to promote Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) equality and the value of friendship, pushing for the school to accommodate ‘changing times’. So they turned to international petition platform Change.org to voice their cause.

“We know the Deb is traditionally a ‘guy girl’ thing and about presenting ourselves as a young women, and we know that there is the formal part for those who don’t want to be a part of deb, but we do and would rather do it with each other, because we both trust and feel comfortable presenting ourselves with one another,” the pair wrote in their letter to Bundoora Secondary College.

“A modern day debutante ball is all about presenting yourself as a young woman or man. It represents maturity and coming of age,” Tia wrote in her petition, which has already received more than 610 signatures supporting the cause.

“For many of us, we do not feel comfortable squeezing into pretty white dresses and strolling down a staircase with a boy in a crisp suit. I want to present myself as a debutante, and I want to do it with my best friend.”

Tia and Rebekah said they were ecstatic to learn the principal allowed the pair to do their deb together.

They thanked the hundreds of supporters who signed the petition and shared their kind words of support during the ‘emotional journey’.

“We are so excited for Deb. It will no longer be a nightmare, but finally the dream we’ve always had!!” the pair said.

  • This weekend round up is great for busy mums. Terrible to think that the Zika virus can be transmitted in saliva and not just by mosquitos.

  • Thank you for the news wrap – good to have this every week. Even though a lot of the news is quite sad, it is good to know what is going on in the world and in Australia.

  • That is terrible that an 11 year old murdered someone.

I hope the child with the virus is ok.

Nice that Ryan and his wife named the baby after his father, it will probably get shortened to Jaimi.

That’s great for those 2 girls going to the deb as partners

  • So sad that man loses his life because of kids brawling.
I sincerely hope nobody else catches this debilitating virus.
It is a tribute that the Reynolds named their daughter, James following the baby’s Grandpa passed away. However I would have chosen the nearest girl’s name to it. It is highly possible that she is going to be teased a lot about her name. They could have used it as a middle name.

  • An interesting snapshot of some of today’s events. Although i must say I can’t understand how an 11 year old can stab and kill someone, very scary.

  • All interesting stories. I must say though – its hard to believe that an 11yo could stab someone like that. I love names that are a tribute to a loved family member – James will be a lovely name for their girl.
