Hello!

I’ve met many people who have wanted to do something more for the world: doing more to give back to the community they live in, to do something they really love but put away when life got busy with children and work and home, doing something for a cause they care about, or simply to find a bigger purpose for their lives instead of just eat, work, sleep, and repeat.

Something that has come up for many of these people is this sentiment: “I would like to do more, but I don’t know where to start”.

What can you uniquely give?

Sometimes we come across a story in the news, or we see something with our own eyes that compel us to take some kind of action, and sometimes we are at the right place at the right time, beckoned to do something that we had never imagined we’d do. But sometimes we sit down and think about our lives and wonder “is this it?” and feel an inkling that there is something greater that we can give and contribute that would bring more meaning and depth to our existence on Earth.  To start exploring what it is that we might be called to do, I say “start with yourself”.

What I mean by starting with the self:

  • Who are you? What do you believe in for humanity?
  • How do you want to live this one life that is yours to create?
  • What ideas do you want you and your life to represent?
  • What do you believe in with all your heart that you are willing to fight for?

When we can get down into the root of who we uniquely are, we can find what it is that we are here to uniquely give.

There are many ways to make a difference and to offer light, hope, and solutions for our world, and I truly believe that every person with their unique package of life purpose, passions, dreams, and life circumstance is meant to offer those things unique to them.  We can watch and learn how others do what they do, but to find YOUR most powerful and fulfilling way of giving, look to your true self.  All that we are meant to offer in this lifetime lies within us.

As you ask yourself “self questions” to get started or to move bigger steps forward, here is a video of a young woman named Maggie who has been an amazing inspiration for me. May you find inspiration from her story to find the light in you.

  • I have helped people in various ways and basically not thought too much about it. I love knitting so I have knitted things like baby’s jumpers, cardigans and beanies. Beanies are used for premature babies older people who have had to have chemo and have lost their hair or really feel the cold
I’ve also knitted trauma teddies which are used in ambulances to pacify little ones during transport to hospital. It also keeps little hand occupied so they don’t get them in the way while the Paramedic is giving treatment. They are also used in hospitals, including the little ones whose parents are rushed into Emergency Dept. in hospitals

  • Maggies story is a wonderful one. Every Christmas, the older kids and myself volunteer at the Colony47 Christmas lunch. I think we all benefit greatly from it

  • And when we give we should do it from our heart. This is what my mum used to tell me.

  • I believe in giving back. I have volunteered to teach English to new migrants for over 40 years now. These people usually end up being some of my very best friends. I love to volunteer wherever I can.

  • I’ve started to become involved with a couple of small dog rescue groups in the city where I live, and with one of them, we regularly take a couple of their resident dogs to visit elderly people in a nursing home. The old folk love it, the dogs love the attention, and we walk away feeling happy too. It’s a win-win situation for everyone. If you have nothing to give but your time, there’s plenty of ways to give your time to benefit others. But give with a glad heart, not because you want praise for what you do.
