Parents need to be aware of the latest crazy dare that kids are participating in, resulting in second degree burns.

Ellie Prescott, a year 10 student in the UK, suffered second-degree burns when she participated in “the deodorant challenge”.

In the bizarre craze, teens spray aerosol close to their skin and aim to last longer than their peers.

Her mother, Jamie Prescott, posted pictures of the burn and a warning to parents on social media.

“For any parents who have children, please, please sit them down and show them these pictures,” she wrote.

“These are the damaging results of something known as ‘the deodorant challenge’ which is currently doing the rounds in Yate and literally involves spraying deodorant onto someone else for as long as possible.

“It’s that simple and results in severe secondary burns.”

Jamie’s warning has had over 3000 shares.

Earlier this year we shared the bizarre challenge sweeping the internet, which sees teenagers posting videos online of them eating laundry pods. Not joking! Read more on that HERE.

The latest dangerous trend among teens is causing major concerns among the medical community.

The “condom snorting challenge” is exactly what it sounds like: Teens are taking to the internet to post videos of themselves snorting a condom up one nostril and inhaling until it — hopefully — re-emerges into the mouth.

The potentially life-threatening practice dates back a few years but has resurfaced in recent days, shares CBS news.

Unsurprisingly, doctors and school officials are speaking out against the dangerous party trick and urging teens not to partake.

The biggest health risk the challenge poses, experts say, is that it’s a choking hazard.

“You are literally putting something down your nose, which connects to your mouth, which connects to your trachea,” Dr. Ammar Ali, an emergency room physician at Beaumont Health, told CBS Detroit. “I mean, you are risking choking on it.”

Other crazy challenges

Parents were warned about a Facebook ‘game’ which encourages teenagers to go missing for 48 hours.

Children as young as 14 have been reported missing, they are believed to have taken part in the 48-Hour Challenge.

The missing teenagers get a higher “score” the more they get mentioned, reported The Mirror.

So when frantic parents desperately searching for their children ask Facebook followers for help it only adds to the “game”.

The dare involved teenagers challenging each other to disappear without a word to their families for 12, 24 or 72 hours.

Please teach your kids to never accept a dare!

There are some terrifying dares around that kids participate in including, the “hot water challenge“, “cinnamon challenge”,  “salt and ice challenge,” “duct tape challenge,” the “Blue Whale game” “deodorant challenge” and the “choking game”.

There was even a teen from Louisiana, USA, who was challenged to put a hammer head in her mouth and then uploaded pictures to social media after it got stuck. CRAZY!

Psychology Today explains, “When it comes to risk, kids lack an adequate braking system. Adolescence is a time of experimentation and exploration. Kids feel powerful and immune to negative consequences. Their bursts of development across the teen years makes them prone to impulsive behaviors. They’re also susceptible to peer influence.”

Dr. Harold S. Koplewicz, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, says that adolescents are vulnerable to mood disorders. Their decision-making brain does not mature until the early to mid-twenties. They need support and guidance. “There’s a real difference between the brains of teenagers and adults… They feel everything so much more intensely.”

Adolescents prefer high-excitement and low-effort activities. They’re receptive to dangerous games, risky acts, and social media contagions.

As Psychology Today says, kids are easily influenced by the latest trends and by their need to belong to the in-crowd.

They use these dares to prove themselves and build their self-esteem. They often cannot correctly evaluate the consequences, for themselves or others.

Although they’re still held responsible if they harm others in the process, they don’t think about such consequences.

What parents can do

Fortunately, there are signs for some of this behavior, such as bloodshot eyes, or odd bruises, cuts or burns.

Parents can educate themselves before their kids go too far. A simple Google search for dangerous social media trends among teenagers will provide some guidance.

Talk to your kids! Know who their mates are and what their interests are, chat to them about the latest dares you might hear about and let them know the dangers involved. Always keep the doors of communication open.

  • Oh good Lord……seriously why would they do such silly things?

  • It is so hard to convince kids of the dangers of some of these things.

  • Why do people want to do anything that hurts them? How ridiculous!

  • I just wish all these stupid dares and challenges would end. NOTHING good comes out of any of them. In fact, all we are seeing is the stupidity, and the fallout of such ridiculous behaviour. When will it stop?

  • I’m glad this mother is warning other parents, but parents also need to be asking why their children are not using common sense and participating in activities which anyone of any age would know is ridiculous and dangerous. These challenges did not happen in my day, what’s changed?

  • “going missing” means a search is probably done and people risking their lives because of a prank. Maybe parents should talk to the kids about. They could warn them that if a search is started that their pocket money will be confiscated to help cover the costs of it.

  • I am so concerned about these current teenage dares and the use of social media just garners more fame, peer group pressure, etc. Articles like these though keep me across them and means I can have a discussion with my teen. So thank you for keeping me updated and in-the-loop.

  • This is yet another crazy challenge. I just hope all my four children, who are still too young to hear of these things, never do such crazy things and have enough common sense to not do them. I think they do, but you never know with peer pressure.

  • Teach your kids early about the concept of natural selection. People who accept stupid dares are the ones who end up thinned out from the heard.
