Unfortunately, even if you try your best to drive responsibly and defensively, accidents can still happen.

After a car accident, there are important steps you should take to ensure your own safety, and the safety of others involved.

Here is a quick list of some of things you – or your teenager- needs to do after a car crash.

1. YOU AND YOUR CAR

Stay calm. Take a few deep breaths and gather your thoughts. Evaluate yourself and the passengers in your car to determine whether or not you need medical attention. If medical attention is needed, call 000.

2. THE OTHER DRIVER

You will need to exchange information with the other driver, or anyone whose property has been damaged (property can include things like houses, fences or gardens). Remember to swap the following details: Names; Addresses; Phone Numbers; Car Make and Model; Car License Number; Insurance Company Name; Insurance Company Phone Number and Insurance Policy Number.

3. WITNESSES

Ask any witnesses to give a statement to the police, to describe what happened. Record their name and phone number.

4. THE ACCIDENT

It’s important to record details of the accident, including the date, time, location and a detailed description. This information may be hard to remember if you don’t write it down immediately following the incident.

5. YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY

Call your insurance company to begin the claims process. You should record details of your insurance company, including their name, phone number and your insurance policy number.

A car accident can be a harrowing experience. Faced with this level of stress, it can be hard to remember what to do and details of the accident. Aussie-driver.com has collated the above information and created a helpful car crash checklist, which is available to download from our website . We recommend printing the checklist and keeping it handy in your car’s glove box.

  • Such a stressful thing having a crash. Good idea to keep a list of things to do in the glove box of your car handy.

  • Make sure you replace any car seats in the car as well. An important step many people seem to forget.

  • Print off or write down all the info you need to collect, so if you do have an accident you can pull the piece of paper out of the glove box and get all the information needed.

  • I would add taking a photo of drivers licence and registration number with your phone. I was scammed after a bloke who ran into the car behind me with enough force to push that car into mine. False name, false address, false phone number. Very pissed off as ended up out of pocket. Also call the number given straight away – to “save” it of course, not because you think the person is sketchy….

  • Great tips. Will print this list off and keep it in the car just incase it is ever needed to ensure all the details are collected.

  • I would also record how many people were in the car. On our only occasion it was reported that there was more people in our car than there was. There was only the two of us. There was no rear seat passengers in our car at all.

  • valuable information, very traumatic experience at any time, but it is important to take a deep breath and not panic, cars can be fixed people not always, I keep a check list in the glove box and have not had to use it fortunately, but I am prepared, u never know what is around the corner.

  • Very important article, especially point 1. You can be in shock after an accident, its important to take a few breaths and check you are ok before leaving your vehicle. I was involved in a multicar accident and in my shock nearly walked into oncoming traffic when I got out of my car. Very dangerous and very scary.
