For a few years there, Katie Holmes was known to most of us as Mrs Tom Cruise, a meek actress swept along on her husband’s madcap ride.

It seemed like she didn’t get out much on her own.

Having rebuilt her life, she’s back on our big screens in a major new film, Phillip Noyce’s The Giver, with veterans Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges and Australia’s Brenton Thwaites.

The movie’s getting major buzz but she has one thing on her mind: daughter Suri.

“The most important thing for me is letting her know how proud I am and that her accomplishments mean everything,” said the 35-year-old actress. “Whatever I do is whatever. It’s really just about her and that’s what I think is most important.”

Raising Suri in the media glare, she works hard to protect her 8-year-old. “I think, of course, you try your best,” said Katie, the youngest of a close-knit five growing up in Toledo, Ohio.

“I try very hard because I am very grateful for my upbringing and my parents and siblings. I try to do what they did for me for my little one.”

As for those seven full-on Tom years, which she escaped by blindsiding him with divorce papers in 2012, she maintains the past is the past.

“I never really look back. I just approach life one day at a time,” she said. “I’m really excited about where I am right now, this movie … I’ve had some really wonderful creative experiences. I am just excited about the future.”

  • What’s really important to me is trying to make the world a better place, so that my kids (and all kids) can have a happy, fulfilling and healthy future.

  • Most important for me is that I can put my head on my pillow at night, knowing that during the day I haven’t done anything that could hurt or cause problems for another person. I try every day to do something that will have a positive impact on someone else’s life. Every one of us is here for a reason. If we can each do one good thing every day, to help someone else (whether it’s a smile, a favour, a phone call/text/email, anything at all) then our time is not wasted. We may sometimes doubt our usefulness or worth, but if you can put a smile on someone’s face, or do someone a good turn without expecting anything in return, then you are precious beyond belief! One of my favourite sayings would have to be “We should all plant some trees that we’ll never seek shade under” … you may never know that something you’ve done has had a positive effect on someone else’s life, but the fact that they know it is what counts
