When a mum in need turned to the internet for help, total strangers jumped to assist her.

“Is anyone at sickkids right now?” Jaiden Cowley wrote. “I have a huge favor to ask. I’m in the er and I can’t leave my daughter alone, but I really need a coffee.”

She shared her post with a picture of her 18-month-old daughter, Amira, who has been waiting 400 days for a heart transplant.

“I’m not far,” a woman named Elizabeth responded. “What do you want?”

The young mum was shocked by how many people wanted to help a stranger at 11 p.m.

“I was thinking maybe someone in the building would read my message,” she told TODAY Parents. “I never expected someone to get in their car and drive to me.”

But 30 minutes later, Elizabeth arrived at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, also known as SickKids, armed with a Starbucks Venti iced coffee.

“It meant so much to me,” Ms Cowley said, noting that she relocated to Toronto for Amira’s medical care and does not have family nearby.

“As Elizabeth was leaving, she said, ‘I’m so glad I could do this for you and let me know if you need anything else,'” Ms Cowley recalled.

Another mother who read the post contacted Ms Cowley to ask for her email. “She sent me $50 to buy coffee,” Ms Cowley told TODAY Parents. “It was such a nice gesture that I started crying.”

She said she is so grateful for the support. “Going through this as a single mom has been a lot. It’s exhausting,” she said. “But now I don’t feel so alone.”

  • So lovely to hear there are still kind people in the world, wish the news on TV had stories like this instead of all the fear, crime and hatred. There is a website called ‘good news network’ and you can read a lot of wonderful things on there.

  • It warms my heart to know that via the internet people in need can be helped. In some hospitals somebody known well to the child has to stay with them unless somebody gives them a break. Mums need to stay strong to be able to care for their little ones and a cup of coffee or other drink and or/food helps them. My niece and I sat with a little girl so the Mum could go home and have a shower and put on fresh clothes, and have a relaxing meal (she made it a hurried one). She didn’t have time to grab more clothes for herself or a soft toy for her little one before being rushed to hospital by Ambulance
