A mother in India gave birth to conjoined twins, despite having a ‘very smooth’ pregnancy.

The male twins, who are fused together at the stomach and share most of their vital organs, were born via caesarean section.

The shocked parents, Guddo Devi, 25, and her husband Dalvir Singh, 27, didn’t have an ultrasound check during the pregnancy and it seemed that nothing was wrong.

‘I never took her for regular medical check-up or an ultrasound as her pregnancy was very smooth,’ said the father, Mr Singh.

‘She never complained of any problem throughout her pregnancy.

‘We were excited for the arrival of our first child but when I saw the babies, I could not believe my eyes.’

He added: “I had only heard of such births but never imagined I would have conjoined twins. My family is heartbroken, but we have faith in God.”

‘Once the babies are discharged, I will take them to a bigger hospital and consult specialists for their separation.’

‘This was the first such case in our hospital and we were all shocked to witness the birth of the children,’ said Dr Ruchi Gupta, a gynaecologist, who delivered the babies.

“We only learnt that the mother was carrying conjoined twins at the last moment.

“The babies are perfectly healthy and so we did not keep them in the intensive care unit and rather handed them to their mother.

“But we cannot tell how long they will survive as conjoined twins have a short lifespan.”

As a daily wage labour, Mr Singh could not afford to take his wife for check-ups during the pregnancy.

Such a shocking turn of events.  I hope they can get the medical help they need.

  • Just shows that even when you think everything is fine you still need your regular medical checks……pregnant or not.

  • While it would be a devastating shock, it is a miracle that they were healthy at birth and did not require intensive care. Their faith in God will give them strength in the battle ahead of them.

  • It is hard in countries where medical costs are high and you think you are doing everything right then it can come as a shock. Glad that most people in Australia can afford health care.

  • How utterly heartbreaking. We are so lucky we live in Australia and we are provided with medical services and benefits.

  • We have a disabled child and had no idea until he was 4 months old and not meeting milestones, he was my first baby so i had no idea what was ‘normal’ or not. It’s heartbreaking. It was not noticed through ultrasounds

  • I hope there is a good outcome for these babies. It would have been such a shock for the parents.

  • How dreadful. The “surprise” would make it much harder to deal with, too.

  • How could it ‘seem like nothing was wrong’?! You can’t tell if a baby has an abnormality without at least an ultrasound. So how could the mother have complained about something seeming ‘wrong’? Let’s hope the father really doesn’t believe she should have noticed something…! These people sound pretty ignorant, as sad as this story is. There is also more going on at least with that baby on the left, who looks to have some other chromosome problem/deformity going on, with the bulging eyes and large, low ears… And if the babies share most vital organs, the outlook seems sadly rather grim…
