This is ridiculous! Female issues take longer? Seriously?!

A Melbourne GP clinic will face investigation after it was found to be charging more for consultations with female doctors.

The clinic displayed a sign that listed a standard consult with a male doctor at $75, compared to $82 for a female doctor, reports 9 news.

The clinic said the rates were set by the GPs themselves, with a group of doctors who happened to be male deciding to conduct shorter consultations.

Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt said he had referred the matter to the Health Care Complaints Commissioner.

Victoria’s Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commissioner, Kristen Hilton, told The Guardian it is “against the law for doctors to treat someone unfavourably because of their gender … This could include charging someone more to see a doctor because they are female.

“We know that some women need or prefer to see a female doctor. So, the practice of charging more to see a female doctor may be discriminatory.”

How do you feel about varying consult fees for men and women? Is it fair?

  • I would love to know what the outcome of this was.

  • If female GP consultations are longer then the male GP consultations, it would make sense to charge more. I guess if you think your appointment won’t go longer then standard, then see the male GP. I know I went to see a female GP for a Pap smear and a couple of other little things. I left the smear til last only to be told the GP didn’t have time, I would have to book another appointment at a later date. I thought that was a bit rude. It takes me forever to talk myself into having a smear, to then be turned away, it wasn’t good

  • This is so stupid, it should be all the same male or female.

  • Just another injustice for those born female. Sad that it’s other females complicit in this one.

  • Arh I don’t think that it’s very fair, it’s no ones fault that they are born female (male) so we shouldn’t be charged extra because if our gender

  • This is ridiculous. I wonder how the Doctors/Practice thought people would just accept this and put up with it. They obviously didn’t think it through at all.

  • The price you pay ends up being the same regardless, once you get the gap payment back. It’s costly enough having to go see a Dr as it is especially when you have to pay that amount up front
