What are your thoughts on kids’ yoga? Are you interested in enrolling your young ones in a class?

There are endless benefits of learning the ancient teachings of yoga in a fun and informal environment from a young age. I receive loads of positive feedback from parents and children.

However, today I want to tell you the benefits I get out of it as a teacher (and maybe you will too as a parent attending a class).

Here are three things I absolutely love about teaching little people yoga.

1.  Seeing kids flourish with a little personal love and attention

At the start of each class we sing the “Om song” and acknowledge each child by name. For seven seconds or so the group gives all attention to just one child and their facial expressions during this time are priceless!  It’s a short emotional journey encompassing joy, slight embarrassment and pride! I love watching it.

2.  Shaking it out to Taylor Swift

When the energy is up (especially when there are 4 year old boys in class), I love doing a full body, song-long body shake off and dance with the kids. I don’t know who gets more out of it? The kids are usually shaking themselves around all the time but it’s us adults that often get stiff and rigid and forget to dance. If I don’t get a dance in at any other time in my week, I know I can make up for it at kids’ yoga.

3.  Seeing peaceful, cross-legged little people with their eyes closed

As well as doing guided meditations and visualisations; we often sit in silence for a short time.

I love watching the eyes of the younger kids dart around the room as they revel in the novelty of sitting together in silence.

The older ones will usually fall back into a comfortable space between their closed eyes and I get a kick out of seeing this!  It reminds me of the Dalai Lama’s quote (below) and makes me feel like we are slowly slowly coming closer to that reality.

“If every 8 year old in the world is taught meditation we will eliminate violence from the world within one generation” – His Holiness The Dalai Lama.

  • This would be great if taught in schools.

  • Children would find it easier to start at a young age as their movements are more flexible and will find it easy to retain it. Meditation is another skill involved in it.

    • For sure! I wish I had of done Yoga when I was younger.

  • I took my little one to mum and bub yoga when he was really little and he loved it. He’s a toddler now so probably wouldn’t sit still for yoga but when he;s a bit older I would definitely consider it again.

  • I’ve been wanting to get into yoga myself, and when I do stretches like pointing my legs up in the air on the bed, my girls join in with me. I’d love to do yoga with them rather than my silly positions haha.

    • Yoga is good for everyone and you spend time together and get fit too.
