A man has been criticised on Facebook after he and two children were photographed wading at a crocodile-infested creek near Cairns.

An image posted to Facebook shows the man standing with his back to a young girl who was wading in shallow waters near Deep Creek, off Kewarra Beach, the Daily Mail reported.

The bystander who shared the image said the man had ignored his warnings about crocodile slides – the marks the animals leave on banks as they enter water – spotted metres away.

The photograph of the family was sent to a Facebook group and shared on Sunday, prompting scores of users to condemn the father who they accused of ‘rampant stupidity’.

‘I absolutely cannot fathom the stupidity of some people. This is at the creek at Kewara beach. Is he keeping an eye on his little girl? No.

Just after I took this the young boy went even further and got right down in the water. I could not believe what I was watching,’ they said.

The by-stander, who has remained anonymous since sending the photograph to the group, added that there was a crocodile slide, evidence of the reptiles slipping in and out of water, on its edge.

‘On the bank down into the water there is a very large croc slide on the embankment which happened yesterday,’ they continued.

‘He stated and I quote “No there isn’t” and looked at me as if I were the stupid one.’

Many comments were quick to share their disapproval of the photograph, with one remarking: ‘Stupidity is rampant… father should know better.’

Deep Creek, the small creek which leads to the beach, has been the site of a number of crocodile sightings and incidents in recent years, reports The Daily Mail.

  • What a complete and utter idiot.

  • I think I would be quite nervous and not go anywhere near the water if I knew crocs frequented there.

  • The first thing I noticed was that he had his back to his little girl. She wasn’t even near him. Even without the Crocodile Warning she could easily have fallen and drown and him not notices she was no longer there. She is quite a bit smaller, and probably younger than the boy.
I hope this photo is given to the Police. This is blatant neglect to the children.

  • I honestly think that people feel that ‘It wont happen to me” …. Why take the risk with your child?

  • I live in cairns and four days before there was a sighting of a crocodile at kewarra beach. We have signs up everywhere on areas that are dangerous. There have been many attacks by crocs at that beach, even a dog got attacked. It was without saying dangerous to have kids near mangroves and that beach area when it\’s known there is a definite crocodile in the area. Especially days within that spotting. ????

  • I don’t think I’d be game to go anywhere near the water if I was up that way.

  • Did he not see what happened to the beautiful 2yr old boy in the States only a couple of weeks ago? Completely and utterly gobsmacked by this!

  • There needs to be more information on this photo and the context.

  • Having travelled through northern WA, Northern Territory and northern Qld to Cairns, there is no way I would trust wading in any water where the crocodiles live. I have seen how fast they move, and especially when you have no idea that they are there.
Very silly thing to do in that country.

  • He just won the Father of the year award for stupidity and ignorance. His girl is too far away and he pride obviously didn’t encourage him to use his common sense, which he obviously does not have. They are all so fortunate a large crock did not take any of them away. They could have all been a meal.

  • I’m glad for everyone’s sake the little girl is all ok.

  • I can understand the concern but without knowing all the facts, and knowing how fresh the slide marks were. Saying this as a kid my parents let me near wade in a creek with up the top end as a kid.. We were very alert to the fact there might be crocs around.. But there is no way i would of turned my back on a kid as in this photo..or let them go out that far..
