A cryptic message painted on a tree trunk led police to lockdown an area near Kendall.

Daily Telegraph report that police investigated possible links to the abduction of William Tyrrell.

The message, painted in bright magenta letters read: “Jesus saves William Tyrell”.

Accompanying the strange text was a jar containing a number of small items placed next to the tree.

The discovery was made by a member of the public driving through bush just 10km from where Spiderman-loving William vanished from his grandmother’s home in September 2014.

Investigators from The Tyrrell strike force Rosann, headed up crack detective inspector Gary Jubelin, were informed of the find last night.

Police at this stage believe the message and jar is part of a “geocaching” game – a global scavenger hunt using GPS technology.

“About 6.30pm yesterday (Sunday 7 February 2016), a member of the public contacted police after a reference to William Tyrrell was found painted on a tree in a state forest near Stewart’s River, about 10km south of Kendall,” NSW Police said via a statement.

“A glass jar with a number of items was located beneath the tree.

“Local police attended and informed detectives attached to Strike Force Rosann. Police secured the area and seized the items.”

“Following inquiries, police have determined the items and painting were a result of ‘geocaching’, an outdoor activity in which participants use GPS coordinates to hide and seek items,” the statement reads.

“Given the circumstances of William’s disappearance, police are disappointed that it has been included in a recreational game.

  • Cruel and sick and heartless. I hope William is returned to his family please safe and sound.

  • A rather cruel & thoughtless thing to do.

  • I’ve done geocaching before. I certainly hope the message on the tree wasn’t linked to the geocache as that’s in really bad taste. I can’t think of any reason why someone would need to spray that message as geocaching encourages looking after the environment instead of desecrating it and bringing poor William into it is terrible.

  • I just hope he is alive and safe and well.

  • This is not a game. This is real life and continues to be a source of such tragedy for this family. I truly hope for them that they receive some closure in the future.

  • My heart goes out to William’s family.

  • I just wish this little boy could be brought home safe and sound. I cant imagine how this family must feel, and then for this to happen, youd get a spark of hope and then it all comes crashing down again.

  • Not very funny really – why would you use this horrible problem as a reason for a game? I also wasn’t happy to see A Current Affair harassing people that the police had already questioned over this affair- how hurtful to the parents and grandmother having to see this, and with no really good outcome. Let the police do their work – TV shows should but out.

  • That’s pretty sick. I’m not up with this geocaching stuff but surely there is something else they could have used!

  • To do such a thing is “sick”. The people who put the geocache things there may not be guilty of painting the tree. That would make it too easy for others to find the items. I know people in groups in Aust. who do geocache and they always hide the items well, not leave them visible. Those I know have never been overseas. There is plenty of locations in our states
