As families feel the pinch of the ever-increasing household bills, we need to find ways to reduce our energy usage.

Becoming increasingly savvy with respect to energy conservation around the home is one approach, and finding effective energy solutions is another.

1.    Make your home more energy friendly

There are many simple things you can do to create a more energy efficient household, reducing your consumption while simultaneously helping the environment.  An easy place to start is by switching off lights and turning off appliances at the power point when they’re not in use. Standby mode continues to draw electricity, so switch off appliances and chargers at the wall wherever possible.

As winter approaches consider draft-proofing gaps beneath doors and old or ill-fitting windows. Closing your curtains on cold days and nights retains the warmth from your gas or electric heating and closing them on hot, summer days blocks the sun’s rays from penetrating your home.

Switching to LED lighting can make significant reductions to your power bills as they use about 80% less energy than other light sources. LED lights last longer and run cooler – which helps to reduce heat build-up in your home during summertime.

Wash your clothes in cold water and use the clothesline or an airer to dry them. Dryers use a lot of energy so utilise the clothesline on warm, sunny days and on cold or wet days a clothes airer indoors will dry the clothes at no extra cost.

Depending on the amount you are prepared to spend on an initial investment, there are many more ways to help reduce your household energy, such as making the switch to solar power and buying energy efficient appliances.  Replacing your plasma TV with an LED TV will save a lot of energy in the long term and upgrading your old gas or electric oven to a convection oven will use a quarter less energy.  When deciding to redecorate choose custom-fitted, insulative window treatments to save around 20% of  heat being lost through ill-fitting windows.

2.    Use an informative provider committed to helping you reduce energy consumption

There are some energy providers who are very switched on when it comes to informing their customers of future developments in renewable energy sources and effective energy consumption methods. Choose an energy provider who is actively educating consumers on ways to make both short and long-term dollar savings.
