Hello!

When my second daughter was born, my first daughter was given a Wizard of OZ DVD.

It was the original version and she watched it time after time after time – it was the perfect distraction when I needed to sit and feed her younger sister.  Her fascination continued for months – we found her a pair of ‘Dorothy’ shoes and as soon as I found a few spare hours, I made her a ‘Dorothy’ dress – we she of course wore as often as possible.

When her third birthday rolled around there was no question as to the theme – the only question was whether I could find a new pair of red slippers to replace her first (now threadbare) pair!

Just in the nick of time, a new pair of red slippers appeared and so plans for her Wizard of OZ party rolled along.

I love this little series of photos – shows you the kids can have fun with a theme that doesn’t need to cost the earth!

Dorothy costume from the Wizard of OZ
I thank my Home Economics classes (and my Mum) that I can use a machine – this little dress cost me less than $13 to make and I think Em wore it for 6 months straight! Such a cute little party dress but of course perfect for the theme. If you don’t sew, you can often find a Dorothy costumes at fancy dress shops or shops like Spotlight.
Wizard of OZ birthday party - little girl with ears and tail to look like the lion
These little ears and tail were again a stitch & sew effort on my part. I used an existing headband and cardboard for the ears and then made a long tube from fur for the lion’s tail.
Young boy with 'tinman' hat made out of tin foil
Big brother joined the fun – making himself a ‘tinman’ hat out of tin foil with the help of Dad. We could have gone all out with tin foil all over but as you can see getting him to stay still for more than a minute is a challenge!
Yellow brick road made out of yellow crepe paper
I love the imagination of children – they used a roll of yellow crepe paper for the ‘Yellow Brick Road’ and kept it in place with a row of rocks. Yellow cupcakes continued the theme at the party table.
Wizard of OZ birthday cake complete with blue check 'Dorothy' ribbon
I brought the theme altogether at cake time with a “Dorothy’ cake – the little red shoes were made from royal icing a few days in advance, yellow smarties formed the yellow brick road, the green candles represented the Emerald City and some leftover fabric from Em’s Dorothy dress finished it off. I iced a white chocolate mud cake with vanilla butter icing before decorating … it all went down a treat!

So without too much hassle, our Wizard of OZ birthday party went off perfectly!  It was a lovely afternoon and was such fun to see all the little lions, totos, Wizards and munchkins arrive for the party!
