A woman has drowned trying to save a nine-year-old girl who had floated into deep waters.

Emergency services were called to Aldinga Beach, south of Adelaide, just before 7pm on Thursday after the woman was pulled unconscious from the water, reports 9 news.

The woman was one of a group that rushed into the water to save a young girl on an inflatable raft who had been pushed into dangerous waters. It is believed she became caught in a rip as she tried to swim back to shore.

Police said paramedics tried to revive the woman on the sand, desperately performing CPR as beachgoers – including the girl she helped save – watched on in horror.

Sadly the woman did not regain consciousness and was pronounced dead at the beach.

RIP. Our thoughts are with all involved.

  • My sympathy to the family of the lady who passed away.
I also feel for the young girl she helped save who otherwise would have lost her life…and witnessed the lady not respond to treatment.
