Mother jailed for three years after torturing a toddler over a period of 15 months.

Lanna Monaghan, 34, admitted putting an electric collar on the boy more than once in July 2015.

Glasgow’s High Court also heard she forced the child to take icy showers, bit him, kicked him, and repeatedly beat with a wooden spoon, once so hard the implement snapped.

The horrific abuse took place from April 2015 to July 2015 and only ended when a family member reporter Monaghan to the authorities.

“You have pleaded guilty to a catalogue of offences over the period of 15 months involving the physical abuse of a defenceless little boy who was aged two to three,” judge Lady Rae told Managhan, who wept throughout her sentencing hearing.

“He did not suffer lasting physical effects, but it is impossible to determine what the emotional impact on this little boy will be in the future.

“This defenceless little boy must have been terrified of you. You should be thankful that you were eventually reported for what you were doing.”

Monaghan told police: “I am truly sorry for what happened, I can’t believe it happened.”

She claimed the child “pushes my buttons, spitting on me, peeing on the floor and being sick on the floor”.

Defence counsel Ronnie Renucci told the court that Monaghan has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.

Mr Renucci added: “She said she felt pressurised, but accepts she had a decision to make. She could have made a decision not to act in the way she did.

“She has expressed genuine remorse and regret at her actions, not only for herself, but also the impact it has had on the child. She gets very emotional about that.”

The court was told that, but for her early plea of guilty, Monaghan would have been jailed for five years.

  • *sigh* …she punished him because he was sick on the floor?
Little Kids dont get the same warnings as older children or adults and when they throw up it can be as much a surprise to them as it is to those around them. Plus for a child its very scary. Poor little Darling :(

  • An electric collar? Poor child. This experience will have terrible repercussions in the development of this child for sure. :-(

  • All kids push buttons, but we don’t react in the way this woman has done. Thank heavens someone reported it, and I guess she made sure there were no signs on the child when family came to visit so that’s why it went on so long. I do hope the child is never given back to her care and he is placed into a loving foster parent’s home so that he can slowly be un-traumatised.
So sorry for the little boy. The mother is old enough to pay for what she has done and get herself OK

  • She needs to have the child taken from her permanently. Hopefully he never has to suffer any torture again. She may have a mental problem but why didn’t someone see that this child needed to be saved from her. Hopefully it’s not too late

  • Life scares me when children can be abused for so long and no one knows about it or reports it. 15 months is such a long time in a child’s life. I hope the mum gets the help she needs, and the little boy recovers not only physically but mentally.

  • Some conflicting items here it says April-July 2015 but states 15 months. Any torture is too much for anyone more a defenseless child. If the longer period why did no-one speak up early. If allowed to see her child again with his permission of course she needs to be supervised.

  • Again I say, why does God allow some people become parents. these little unsuspecting people who put their utmost trust in the people who are ordained to watch over them and help them grow into adults. For shame woman, you don’t deserve this or any child. Someone needs to take care of you the way you did your son, and see how you feel being tortured subjugated to that kind of treatment. If I were the judge, my decision would be first to serve a life sentence on you and the second would be to castrate you so that you would never be able to conceive any more children. You are without a doubt a wicked, wicked woman. That dear little boy, the effects of the torture to his body may to some degree disappear but the psychological damage you have inflicted on this tiny person will most obviously affect him for the rest of his life. I’d like to try out some of the techniques you used on him for you and see how you like it. You are definitely disturbed!!!

  • Three years is far too lenient. I hope she never goes near children again.

  • lock her up and throw away the key, then let the other inmates do to it what it inflicted on this poor child

  • These stories make me ill. There is no place in society for her. She should be treated in prison like she treated this child.

  • That is absolutely disgraceful. She should serve a much longer sentence
