A woman dived onto the bonnet of her car in an attempt to stop a thief getting away with a baby secured in the back seat.

Victoria Police allege a Mercedes station wagon was taken from the Australian International Academy at the intersection of O’Hea and Ross Street in Coburg about 3pm.

It’s understood two woman were standing on the street when a man allegedly jumped into the vehicle and drove off. A six-month old baby boy was in the back seat at the time.

“I heard a woman screaming… call the police,” a witness told 9NEWS.

CCTV showed the woman’s friend then unsuccessfully trying to stop the thief by jumping on the bonnet of the moving Mercedes.

The car was located dumped, with the baby safe and well inside, near Haig Avenue a short time later.

One person has been taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition, a spokesperson from Ambulance Victoria told 9NEWS.

The alleged offender remains on the run.

How scary! I can’t imagine how she would feel.

  • This is so scary. I always usher my younger two children into the back seat whilst I unload the groceries into the boot, so they can’t step into traffic without me realising. Horrible to think someone would take advantage so quickly with the mother right there.

  • It must have been so scary indeed. Probably any mother would have tried to stop it that way. I’m glad the baby in the car was found safe and sound!

  • This would have been a terrifying experience. Most Mums put the babies into their car either putting shopping in the boot. You definitely have to if you are folding down the baby stroller to store it in the boot. Thankfully the car was abandoned where it was found quickly. Had it been hot weather it would have been very dangerous. I remember a car being stolen some years ago in similar circumstances. The thief lifted the baby out of the car still restrained in his/her babyseat and somebody found him/her shortly afterwards.

  • As dangerous as it is to jump on a car bonnet, I can totally understand this person’s need to rescue the baby. The person who stole the car is a low-life. I hope they catch him.
