I’m not at all surprised. The GFC hit in 2008 and in 2008/2009 everything in Australia went on super mega sale. Plus, the US economy took a massive hit, and the Australian dollar started to climb. In 2012 the Aussie dollar was significantly higher than the American dollar yet stores in Australia were charging significantly more than American stores for the same item. This made sense when the Aussie dollar was half that of the US dollar but made no sense when the Aussie dollar was more. Australian shoppers got super savvy, and used to getting things on discount or buying them from overseas and having them shipped at a cheaper price. Plus, Aussie store hours are awful compared to that in other countries. Although they have started to extend over the past few years, Monday-Thursday you really can’t go the shops as they are closed by the time you leave work. People have got into the habit of shopping online as the stores are always “open.”
