Hello!

Right now all the kids that go to school with my kids are wearing those white Adidas tennis shoes with the navy stripes.

They don’t play tennis but suddenly, out of nowhere, these shoes have become really popular with the tweens and teens my children have as close friends.

I’m assuming it’s not isolated to the children at our school. Clearly the marketing machine over at Adidas have worked their magic and this particular shoe is back on trend and has quickly become the shoe of choice (even with the big ole price tag that comes with them).

FYI I’ve told my chillies that if they want them, they’ll need to save their pennies because the selection of sports shoes they have are probably much better for their feet and they’re perfectly good for another 6 months, so there won’t be any new Adidas shoes anytime soon.

It’s a bit of a ‘what’s in fashion | what’s trendy | and what are the cool kids wearing’ isn’t it?

Like it’s always been I guess.

Although the latest ‘Grass Roots’ campaign for the humble Dunlop Volley is really nothing like what I was expecting when I read the headline today that they’ve refreshed their image. Certainly not the Dunlop Volleys from my childhood!

Accordingly to the Global Brand Manager for Dunlop …

“The Grass Roots campaign uses our voice to speak to the frustration of many young Australians who feel like for the first time in generations their freedom is being eroded, instead of being advanced. The campaign celebrates one of the most universal freedoms, freedom of who we love and how we love them. In doing so we are ‘rooting for change’ in a typically lighthearted Australian way”.

Ooookaaaaay …

They’ve really taken it up a notch and I’m thinking that my kids are really not the intended audience for their new range of Dunlops!

But I do know that my kids will see this ad at some point soon (if you want to sell to tweens and teens, you put young adults in the ads) – it’s on YouTube now and there’s probably a TV version of this ready to go.

Here’s a sneak peek …

I love it. I love the fact it celebrates equality, freedom and change.  From an ex advertising agency suit it’s beautifully executed … but I’m just not sure I’m ready for this to be the way my kids are introduced to Dunlop Volleys!

As a Mum, what do you think about this ad?

Is it going to put you off buying them for you or your kids?  Or are you cool with it and does it do what it says – celebrates life, love and freedom?

  • Certainly not a children’s add. Actually, has backfired for me – wouldn’t be buying these.

  • This ad isn’t aimed for kids and no, this wouldn’t necessarily want me to purchase dunlop volleys. Was there a need for the ad to include nudity? Really?! It could have been made more tasteful to showcase “universal freedom”.

  • If anything these ads would turn me off buying Dunlop Volleys completely for anyone in the family.

    • I agree with you. That ad also shouldn’t be shown when youngsters could be watching TV. It is very close to porn.
Some schools now stipulate what type of sports shoes pupils are to wear so that they protect their feet from jarring on hard surfaces, they support their ankles etc. They are considered part of their sports uniform.

  • No I don’t like this add.
The tweens and teens will only see the naked bodies and won’t get the message behind it….and to be honest the clothes don’t need to come of to send that message !

  • What a stupid ad – jeezz does everything need to be sexualised. I think there is too much of it already, no need to add it to sport shoes :/

  • I dont get the point behind the ad other then to have people talking about it like we are here.
I dont think its a clever ad at all

  • I too do not like this ad … the ad is more catered to condoms than sports shoes.

But seriously what are they teaching our young here.

  • I get the ‘wow factor’ to the campaign, but personally – its not going to make me go out & buy any vollies, lol

  • (Typo- sorry) We teach our teens and tweens to NOT post naked pics on social media. This ad goes against all that, what is this ad teaching!

    Reply

  • Personally I don’t like the ad at all.

    • It does not work for me either and the shoes message seems to get lost.

  • We teach or teens and tweens to no post naked pics on social media. This ad goes against all that, what is this ad teaching!

  • The ads is a bit sexy and suggestive! Everything goes around, brands that were expensive and exclusive when I was young are now sold cheap at target, big w etc

  • Seems like a really strange choice for an ad

  • I imagine the TV version will be quite different. The clip is so fast paced and busy, not sure if they have reached the target? Shoes do not stand out.
