Actress Lake Bell has shared her home birth experiences, highlighting the joy but also potential dangers of the popular birth trend.

Speaking to Dax Shepard on his podcast Armchair Expert, American actress Lake Bell has spoken out about her two very different home birth experiences.

While Lake’s first daughter Nova was born at home without any complications, her son Ozgood’s birth story was quite traumatic leaving her unsure about the safety of choosing to have a home birth.

Same But Different

Lake says her two home births could not have been more different despite a very similar series of events.

“We had two home births,” she said. “The first was with Nova…I felt very empowered. The home birth was this amazing primal bonding.”

It wasn’t all smooth sailing with the baby born with the cord wrapped around her neck, requiring immediate attention.

“The midwife gave her three lifesaving breaths on my best and my husband was there,” she recounted. “She came to life and we saw it.”

Despite a few hiccups during her first experience, Lake was determined to have a home birth for her second child but unfortunately it didn’t go to plan.

“The same thing happened,” she said. “I was at home and he had the cord wrapped around his neck…he was not coming to.”

“Now you’re in really f******* life and death. Your child is there and the entire room is trying to resuscitate him and they can’t. The paramedics are on their way and he’s still there. This person you don’t yet know.”

Personal Choice

In the US, homebirths are not recommended, but in Australia, women have the right to choose where and how they give birth to their baby.

Those who decide to have their baby at home need to ensure that they are considered a ‘low risk’ pregnancy and have a registered midwife or doctor on hand to assist in case of an emergency.

With everyone from Meghan Markle to Gisele Bunchen and Julianne Moore endorsing the practice of home birth, it is definitely an option growing in popularity, but it’s important to be properly informed and speak to your health care provider about whether it is the right choice for you.

  • No thank you. I know that if someone has had a home birth and all went well then they think that you are crazy to want to go to the hospital. Im the other way I guess. My auntie was forced to have her 2nd child at home as back in those days in the UK if you had already had a child with no issues and your pregnancy was considered low risk then you had your baby at home. Her son was born and had issues. IF he had been born in a hospital he would have been attended to straight away and would have been ok but because he was not given emergency medical help he ended up with many issues and one being as his brain was starved of oxygen he was blind and his brain was affected so he has an intellectual impairment.

  • No – pleased I went to hospital each time.

  • Sounds nice and peaceful BUT you never know what could go wrong, even if you have the healthiest pregnancy…The safety of Hospital for me.

  • I wouldn’t like a home birth. You just don’t know what can go wrong .

  • No I want the insurance a hospital offers and luckily because I would have bled to death after my first born without prompt medical care.

  • It was never an option for me with too many miscarriages already I wasn’t willing to take any chances. Everyone is different and I don’t condemn women who choose a home birth. Just make sure you take every precaution you can think of.

  • No, I would not have ever considered this. It took me 4 years to get pregnant so I was not taking any risks whatsoever. As it turned out, I needed everything the hospital had to offer to deliver a healthy baby safely.

  • No I would not even consider a home birth.

  • And this is why it’s not recommended. Babies get stuck or in distress and they’d have no way to monitor that.

  • absolutely not, my last two births were emergency caesareans with pre eclamsia and gestational diabetes and 8 weeks early!

  • Already being scared, for lack of a better word, of giving birth, a home birth is not for me. I specifically chose a hospital that were renown for years of experience delivering babies and for their emergency department.

  • Nope…i didn’t and i wouldn’t risk it.

  • No I wouldn’t I wanted the safety of medical help if things went wrong

  • I haven’t had a homebirth and I personally wouldn’t have one just because I want medical equipment around me and staff. If there are any complications it’s better if you’re in hospital I believe.

    Reply

  • This is not a risk I’d want to take.
