Family left devastated when their infant was accidentally cremated after hospital “mix up”.

A stillborn baby and a miscarried baby were mixed up, resulting in the wrong baby being cremated, reports 9 NEWS.

NSW health minister Jillian Skinner said she wasn’t aware of the mix-ups, and would have ordered an investigation if she had been.

“If it was brought to my attention, I would seek advice from the ministry about what happened in that particular case, whether it was isolated, and what measures have been taken to address it,” she said.

The Daily Mail reports, the parents of a stillborn baby were left devastated after their infant was accidentally cremated despite their request for a burial in an unfortunate hospital mix-up.

In late 2015 the identities of two babies, one that was miscarried and one stillborn at a Sydney hospital, were confused at a mortuary, a committee was told.

One of the babies was incorrectly identified with a blanket label, leading staff to believe it was the other baby.

The revelation came when the minister fronted a budget estimates hearing.

Ms Skinner was also questioned over why she left it to the Chief Health Minister Kerry Chant to release a report into the gas mix-up at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital that left one baby dead and another with severe injuries.

Ms Skinner previously said providing support to the bereaved families was “as much” as she could do.

“We’re providing support through the health department, and that’s as much as I can do,” she said.

Baby John Ghanem died in July this year when he was accidentally given nitrous gas instead of oxygen.

  • The babies should have hospital labels placed on them immediately so there is no risk of errors. There would be absolutely no excuse for such tragic mistakes.
