A new NSW State Government plan aims to reduce the cost of living for toll paying motorists.

If you commute to work, and choose to drive, chances are you are paying a significant amount for tolls each week. For NSW drivers however, a new state government plan promises to provide some relief for toll paying motorists. Privately registered cars, utes, four-wheel-drives and motorcycles who pay over the threshold in tolls each week could be eligible for free rego – we wouldn’t say no to that!

Significant Discounts

The Daily Mail reports that Australian motorists who spend over $25 a week in tolls will not have to pay for their registration. NSW drivers who find themselves forking out upwards of $15 a week on tolls will also be eligible for half-priced rego, and families with more than one vehicle on an E-toll account will be able to add up their total spend to qualify for the discounts. So that equates to families with a $1300 toll expense per year qualifying for free registration and those spending $780 a year only required to pay half the cost. While a maximum saving of $211 doesn’t seem like a lot, you can buy some seriously good Christmas presents with that sort of money…

Giving Back

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said that her government’s reforms have significantly reduced costs for motorists. “In this year alone, we have given back more than $200 million to people in NSW in cost of living relief,” she said. “We know car rego, insurance and CTP all adds up and it’s a very stressful time. Now with our reforms you are getting about $180 off your CTP greenslip, you are getting free rego or half price rego, and massive discounts in other areas.”

With the cost of living ever on the rise, we’ll take any opportunity we can to save some money on the daily commute! The discounts are set to be available from July next year, so stay tuned.

  • Wouldn’t it be better to look at getting cars off the road – eg improving public transport?

  • what about QLD

  • Some places the tolls seem out of hand. A recent visit to Sydney and a few frustrating wrong turns I got hit with almost $20 worth of tolls in around 6 minutes. Sigh. Good idea for those with not many options than to take toll roads.

  • The cost of living is incredible. Anything to help relieve Australians is a good thing.

  • In doing this, hopefully they take into account driving offences . It may give people more incentive to not break the rules which can otherwise kill or injure themselves or others.

  • Won’t be happening here any time soon. We don’t have any roads that require us to pay a toll to travel on

  • It’s a pretty good idea! Might be a good idea to roll out across all roll paying states

  • Bring it on Australia wide. What a winner.

  • Any free rego is good for whoever gets it.

  • A great idea that would be great for us in Melbourne ‘

  • I am in Melbourne but refuse to use Toll roads in my car because it is classed as a LCV so I get charged more than other cars. We use toll roads in husband’s car but it is a work car so we don’t pay for any of it.

  • I don’t drive much but this is good for those that does because it all adds up!

  • Great plan, the amount of toll you pay must be quite high though.

  • What a great idea. Wonder if other states will adopt this idea too.
