ATM machines, conveyor belts, fresh fruit and veggies and packaged raw meat are all active breeding grounds for bacteria, according to a number of recent studies centred on supermarket hygiene.

This information may not surprise you.  After all the sheer number of people in any given supermarket at one time all touching these items as they purchase their groceries should give you an instant indication of the potential of germs to be spread far and wide.

According to the various studies which were featured on dailymail.co.uk, fresh fruit and veggies have literally been touched by dozens of people before we take them home to consume.  Dents and bruising can also be an easy access point for bacteria to breed in.

The conveyor belts where we all load up our purchases to be scanned are also a major area of germ infestation.  Germs from people’s hands and those already existing on the products we are purchasing easily transfer onto the conveyor belt to be spread further afield.

Packaged raw meat such as chicken also contains high levels of bacteria, both on the internal and external packaging.

Live bacteria have also been found on ATM and Eftpos machines.  Bacteria such as those that cause virus such as diarrhoea and gastro are found in extreme amounts on the touchpads we all use.

As you rush around doing your last minute Christmas shopping, don’t forget to pack your hand sanitiser.  Protect yourself and your family from the potential bacteria that lurks on your favourite items.

  • Ugh, I had no idea shopping could be so yucky! I hadn’t worried about it until now, though I don’t get sick often and always wash my hands when I get home, so I guess I don’t need to worry too much. I don’t want to end up a huge germaphobe.

  • If you are unlucky enough to have a handbag check, are you going to be accused of shoplifting? When I get home with my shopping, I always wash my hands with antibacterial liquid soap. I find hand sanitiser it dries my skin too much and sometimes stings. I always have an urge to wash it off if I am home.
I take some with me when travelling and using public conveniences as those areas put you at higher risk of infection handling taps and doors.

  • By being exposed to all this bacteria our immune systems are working and getting stronger. This is why a lot of people are getting sick because they are not exposed to the bacteria good and bad. Not all bacteria is bad. there are good guys too! lol!!!

  • Yes I am always very wary as I saw this old man repeatedly sneeze literally all over the fruit and veg in the supermarket a while ago. It was disgusting and made me feel quite sick, so I always make sure I wash them well. I did tell the store staff and they did remove some of the produce at the front.

  • Germs and bacteria are everywhere. We just have to make sure we wash our hands properly and teach our children too as well.

  • I think this is pretty much common knowledge or at least common sense. Washing and or cooking before eating is essential. Probably better not to think about it too much otherwise we will never eat or have to start growing our own veggies :)

    • We wash everything – but you do see people going along and eating fruit and vegies in the shops like it is a buffet! ;)
