Hello!

“My 15yo son needs to have 2 of his wisdom teeth taken out and the dentist has given him the choice of the chair or to have a general – any tips from mums who have been there done that? Is one better for recovery than the other?” Do you have any advice for wisdom teeth removal?

  • My sister had her wisdoms taken out, and it was done via surgery while under anaesthetic .. I hope it all worked out for your son ~

  • I add on put in the chair an thn the rest under ga. I would go ga every time the only thing is cant drive for 24 hours but he is 15 so that doesn’t matter

  • hope you found the answers you were after and you and your son were able to make a decision

  • How did it go Hope things went well

  • how did you go, did you make a decision?

  • General would be fine if in doubt get a second opinion

  • I haven’t had mine out but everyone else in my family has had general.

  • Have these answers been helpful?

  • General if you can avoid pain do it.

  • Better to get general. Its more comfortable for ur son. That’s wot I had done

  • I’ve heard horrible stories- my partner had his done WITHOUT any anaesthetic and still refuses to go to the dentist now! I’d go the anaesthetic for sure!

  • I personally had mine taken out under a general with absolutely no problems at all. I have heard some real horror stories from people who have had them out in the chair! It also makes a big difference depending on where the teeth are situated under the gums, if they are turned at all – I would definitely go for the general.

  • I’ve had teeth removed in the chair to get braces and then wisdom teeth removed under general. I would definitely choose general for my son or for myself!

  • Me too- when I was a teenager I had them all out in the chair, no problems, just swollen face for a week or so as I recall. I thought it’s generally best to avoid generals as much as possible…

  • I did it in the chair and I was fine when I was a teenager

  • general all the way I think. It’s a pretty major bit of dental surgery!

  • Kids can get afraid of needles in case of local…so maybe prefer general.

  • Talk to your son ask him what he wants, I personally wouldn’t go under after hearing the story of the peodofile doing things to kids whilst they were under general, but you and your son should talk find out what he wants and good luck 🙂

  • I agree with mandyjpearson find out the pros and cons off the dentist

  • Most dentists will request an Xray to determine how the wisdom teeth roots are sitting. If there’s no problems with them, then the chair is fine, provided your son doesn’t mind the local anaesthesia (needles)…the recovery time is a lot quicker too just with normal painkillers & an ice pack if necessary. Under general anaesthetic, there are always risks including adverse reactions or allergies to the anaesthesia, & a longer recovery time. What would he prefer? You must also factor in the costs depending on your private health cover provides as well. I had my wisdom teeth out in the chair, it was all done in 5 – 10 minutes, an ice pack and some nurofen & I was good as gold the following day. Find out all the pros & cons, see what your son would prefer, & make your decision from there.
