Hello!

“My 15yo son needs to have 2 of his wisdom teeth taken out and the dentist has given him the choice of the chair or to have a general – any tips from mums who have been there done that? Is one better for recovery than the other?” Do you have any advice for wisdom teeth removal?

  • I had mine taken out in the chair and it was an awful experience as two were impacted under the bone. As others have said, find out the benefits for both, and get a second opinion if you can.

  • I would gather all the information I could and make the choice together. The chair is likely to be less expensive, which is why I went through the horrific ordeal of having my completely sideways wisdom teeth taken out this year.

  • Give him the choice with all the facts you can find per choice, you know your son the best, encourage him with his choice.

  • I think it depends of the severity of the matter. I had mine out at 19 under a general anaesthetic however, my teeth are huge & came out in 7 pieces. I would ask what the dentist thinks, they are the experts, there is most likely a cost involved too so it depends on a few different factors but I hope it goes well 🙂

  • i would let him choose

  • 100% get them donne under GA. Given there is often close proximity to the nerve you’d like to think that a surgeon has a better chance to get the tooth extracted without permanent nerve damage causing lip or chin numbness which might be permanent. Make sure you check with your private health insurance if you have it what your coverage would reimburse you for. If you can adjust the policy before the surgery you might find you get most of the cost back Otherwise it is pretty expensive. Either way, worth it for the better removal technique I’d say.

  • I would give him the choice of which way he would have them out.

  • I had mine out as recommended with general due to the deepness of the roots. With a general you don’t move at all so less likely of damage and soreness around gums. I have a normal molars out in the chair when i had braces and the sound of crunching and grinding made be wince and move around in the chair which gave me alot of bruising and healing time due to me moving. I my kids need it done, i would take general and nothing else. Less trumatised

  • i have had mine out in the chair. They said having the general would take awhile, but if they aren’t bothering him then wait for the general. I am 31 and I did not like them pulling them out. felt awful and had to have 5 needles. and with numbing cream first, they still hurt. If I have to have the other 2 out, I will wait for a general

  • If the dentist has given the choice, having them out in the chair wont be too bad. If you (he) wasn’t given a choice, its because the dentist decided it would be easier for all that way.

  • I would give him the choice also.

  • I had my wisdom teeth out several years ago and wasn’t given the option of the chair, but even if I was I would still prefer a general. But ask your son and see what he wants to do. Recovery for me was a week and I only had 2 teeth removed but everyone is different. hope he has a speedy recovery either way!

  • I had to have 1 of my wisdom teeth out when I was 32 as it had cracked. I decided to go with the general and have all four at the same time. This was a good thing as one of the others was coming up sideways. I chose this as I am the biggest softy when it comes to needles and found my recovery was so much easier. Kept the ice on the face continuously to reduce the swelling, made sure I rinsed regularly as recommended and ate soft foods. As long as your son is okay have a general, I would be kind to him and go with it.

  • ask him what her would prefer. If he can handle a needle in to the gum he might be ok it only hurts for a few seconds..

  • my son recently went under a general and he had no problems afterwards no sickness just a little tiredness.i myself have had my wisdom’s done unfortunately the pain after the removal can be sore, but he will be prescribed pain relief but i would go a general at least he’ll have some relief while getting it done.

  • I had all four out under general when I was a teenager. It was great to get it all over and done with because it was horrible!

  • I have had 2 out at the same time in t he chair and I would never ever do it again if I could afford it!!!

  • i’ve done one in a chair and only go general next time as it was terrible

  • I had one removed by local. I would say that if he needs 2 removed, why not take all 4 at once under general? General all the way in my mind

  • I have actually had a wisdom tooth out a few years ago myself. If your budget allows for it, I would recommend taking him to a cosmetic dentist if possible. These guys are trained to do a lot of elective work as well as the basics. Due to the nature of their work, they only stay in the job if they are gentle, as people go to them voluntarily. I had my tooth removed by a cosmetic dentist. I had a local and the removal took less than 20 seconds, and had no pain whatsoever once the anaesthetic wore off. I would be happy to pay the extra to have him remove my next one.
