I definitely second going on Facebook and getting involved in the groups for hair and beauty quite often apprentices need to do a colour or cut sometimes at extremely popular salons that I could never afford normally, or others want to practice certain trends and it’s either free or minimal cost, also the tafes or beauty schools if you go on there sites they sometimes have offers for people to come in yes the students work on you but there teacher is there and I’ve had amazing results ????

Most beauty schools have a Facebook page you can join (not just TAFE but also other independent training schools) and many places have a “haircut models from XXXX [town] you can join and apprentices and trainees will post when they need a model. I recently got a full set of acrylic nails and a facial for NOTHING by volunteering for them. Yes it may take a little while longer because they are training but all supervised by teachers and they did a great job!

Ooh, I’m going to look into this, though I think our closest TAFE is too far away to be practical.

I recently came across a beauty salon hack at my favorite salon, female hair costs 50 dollars to cut, male hair costs 30 dollars to cut.
I wore a beard, and moderately stylish clothes. I then asked the person at the counter, to describe to me what the price should be in the event that my gender was not either of those two options but both, at the same time.
The stylist seemed a little confused, so i asked for a male haircut (this is where the beard came in handy).
After she did the best job i have ever been presented by a stylist, and took into account her wisdom on how to thin hair (with sharp scissors not comb scissors like i am a sheep), and her ability to not cut way too much length off because she had no alterior motive.

I presented the stylist with 30 dollars to put into the till. and gave the stylist 10 dollars as a tip.

I then walked into the waxing place across the mall, and asked the same questions, the stylist/hair puller told me that males cannot get a brazillian and females can, i told the stylist/hair puller that since I am in both categories, i should be able to 1: get a brazillian and 2: not get a brazillian.

I adhered to this price scheme, and conveyed to her my understanding that the females in the building would prefer not to see male genitalia.
The stylist said she could ask someone about what the price would be.
I left.

Apprentices in the salons around us often offer cheaper hair cuts too.

I’ve done this too – one small hiccup can be that sometimes they only do it on certain days or times. Great option if it’s available, though.

My hair is curly so I recently tipped my head over and started chopping. Luckily curly hair doesn’t show if not perfectly cut.

Along with not having a wash and dry; I extend the length between cuts if needed.

Thanks so much for sharing this is a great idea. You will find most beauty schools will offer something similar but i am very fussy with my hair and like to go to the same person each time. I have found a great lady who has a home salon and i have found she is slightly cheaper that a shop salon. This is also an option to consider if you can find a good one.

My haircut routine is basic and when saving money; wash and dry is not an option; I go with cut only.

I’ve noticed that spots are harder to snag to get foils. I’ve been waiting a little while, but I can’t afford to get them done at a regular salon, so I’m happy to wait!

also to mention that you need to agree that if any mistakes happen you cant complain on this as this is for training purposes.

This is such a great idea.
Some salons also have training nights where you can get things done at reduced prices.
