Hello!

I have a 7 week old who is bottle feed (unable to breast feed) he spent his first week in hospital on a course of antibiotics. The hospital had him on S26Gold which he projectile vomited. I placed him on NAN Pro HA, less vomit & reflux but terrible nappies and tummy pains. My husband by mistake purchased the next tin of NAN Pro Gold, back to vomits & reflux. I tried Karicare AR, which is a thickened formula, no vomit or reflux, but lots of tummy pain and he was being lazy as it is thick he only would have small amounts every couple of hours. So back to a Karicare Gold formula! The Health Centre Nurse and Paediatrician (like myself) would like to just settle on one formula and stick to it. Aldi have their own brand which is $10 cheaper than all the known brands (I won’t use anything but the Aldi Nappies for quality & price). But is cheaper best when it comes to our children’s health & nutrition? Are all the formulas much of a muchness? Times are tight on a single wage and $10 per week is a big saving, has anyone tried or read reviews of the Aldi formula? Do you have any Aldi formula recommendations?

  • We don’t have Aldi over here, but if we did, I’d try it. Heinz was the only formula that worked for my baby’s tummy and that’s not one of the expensive ones.

  • I would go with whatever agrees with your baby. If the cheapest formula is agreeing with bub then roll with it! If not try something that works. We used karicare gold after trying all the similar ones to you… It worked the best so we would just shop around for the best price.

  • aldi is great, you will find all there products are made by the “big name brands” pasta is all san remo etc. you cant go wrong, and you are better off, shopping is so expensive these days.

  • There are very strict Australian standards for formulas, all formulas sold in the country must conform to them. I was told by my lactation consultants that you can buy the cheapest home brand formula and it will have everything that’s necessary in it. The extra ingredients in the more expensive brands are fads, they’re not necessary, or they would be compulsory. And I found the cheaper brands were much better for my baby’s tummy.

  • My daughter was on the Nan formula for a short while to supplement breast feeds as she got older… As she was a very gassy baby and seemed to get a little upset in tummy after most feeds I gave her gripe water (Corams brand – Alcohol Free) and absolutely swear by it – No more tummy troubles 🙂

  • Aldis products are generally very good so maybe buy 1 or 2 cans and see how you go

  • I used Aldi for my second son and never had a problem. He was a reflux baby. My neighbor also used it and her dr told her that Australian standards are so strict for formula all the brands are pretty much the same.

  • Mine were good on s26 but I do remember trying a few others a couple of times due to reflux and vomiting, but ended up back on s26 after having no more probs. I did have one that needed to be burped again about 30 minutes into sleep and was good for the rest of the night. I don’t think most expensive is any different than the cheapest and as you are having issues it prob wont hurt to try. Maybe water it down a little more than recommended? Goodluck.

  • I never had milk so my 3 have all had formula. I did end up on s26 but only because that was the one that my kids tolerated best. Each kid is different

  • I had a fantastic doctor who had 5 daughters. He showed me a photo of his 5 daughters at a graduation, all formula babies he said. Which one I asked….The one we could afford he replied. He said the basic recipe was the same and that there was no way the most expensive formula was going to give you a healthier or smarter child. Find the one your baby likes so normal old Karicare it was!

  • I had the same issues and my health nurse put us on s26 gold lactose free and then later the new “comfort” one is that range, it worked a treat for the tummy pains.

  • chatting with your health nurse or doctor could be a good idea too to give you facts and figures on what is best and why

  • I used to use Enfalac as my son was lactose intolerant & I found it fantastic. It’s not one of the popular ones but may be worth looking into.

  • It sounds like gluten may be the issue?

  • Have you tried a lactose free formula. My little one was really sick with tummy pains etc, finally worked out she was lactose intolerant. A soy formula made such a huge difference.

  • I purchased the Aldi brand for the same reason for my newborn a week & a half ago due to my milk running out. Unfortunately, he tended to block up, I’m not sure if it was due to going from breast to formula or the brand but have noticed since purchasing s26 he still struggles a little but not nearly as much. hes regular now. I’m going to try again with the Aldi in a few weeks when his tummy has matured a bit more but if he gets blocked again that’ll be the last time. I think its a matter of every baby is different & its trial & error. Unfortunately its an expensive trial each time 🙁

  • Formulas sold in Australia have to meet a minimum standard, so your baby won’t miss out on any nutrients if you use a cheaper formula. Good luck, and I hope you find one that works.

  • i would recommend Bellamys organic formula, nice and gently on the little ones tummy

  • I used Bellamys Organic! It was great and just added an extra scoop

  • My girls always had trouble with gold formula but were much better in regular. My youngest had reflux and we tried her on soy formula but it turns it she also has a massive soy intolerance! At nearly 5 she still gets an upset tummy from soy products so be cautious.
