Get the ones that need to be screwed in – it’s a bit more work and to install and get rid of but provides the best peace of mind

Hoping to find an answer here for me. Grandson is visiting for Christmas and I need something around the fire to keep him safe. Can’t screw anything in to the walls, as it’s a rental

Get one you can screw into the wall.

Make sure there is no frame below the gate. It is quite easy to trip over them even though I am aware of it. Bear in mind that houses have concrete floors and you are going to fall “pretty hard”. I would never live in a two storey house with a baby/toddler. Also as you age you may find the stairs to be a hindrance. A relative of mine in her late 60s rented one while the house they bought had some renovations done before they moved in. She is pretty fit “but couldn’t wait” until the house was finished. After 3 weeks she was finding it tiring.

I would recommend you get the ones that need to be screwed into the wall. My parents place you couldn’t do that because they didn’t want to screw the other side into their wooden stair case. We never really found a solution to that other then putting a piece of wood in between and just using the pressure type gate.
I do think now baby Bunnings have some good English brand gates which are made for stairs

We never had a problem with our gates slipping off, although we did have our punch a hole through the wall! We didn’t make sure there was a support beam on either side of the gate props, and tightened the gate to the point where it went straight through! So my moral is to make sure the wall can support your solution first.

Occasionally Aldi has safety gates and at a good price

We have baby gates at top and bottom of stairs. They have never slipped off. Ours are from Bunnings.

some excellent suggestions for toddler-proofing stairs. Can also be used to restrict access to the garage from the house or to the laundry area.

Permanent ones that are attached to the walls are best!!

I have baby gates on the kids rooms so they can leave the door open and the dogs can not go in and they have never slipped off mine aslo has nobs you you tighten as well as suction cups .

It may be the wrong type you got or some of what call dodgy. Also you could try to permanently attach it to the spot you need it for with screws or somthing. Hope you find one that works for you

We had a wooden gate specially made and installed for this exact same reason. That lot of grandkids has grown up and now it is used to control where our doggie goes. Never regretted getting it installed. Good luck.

If you find the right baby gate it shouldn’t slip off. You may want to get one that is permanently affixed to the wall, and just repair the (minor) damage once you’re past the little kid stage.

All baby gates should come with little cups that the ends go into and you can screw them into the wall so the gate won’t slip at all.

My husband is a handyman & made this for the top of our stairs. It is perfect & self closes with a pool fence latch, very safe!!

I used baby gates but I had ones that were permanently fixed to the walls. Once we didn’t need them anymore, we removed them and patched/painted the wall.

Something more permanent screwed into the wall/staircase railing if possible.

You could screw them In if possible
